I think most nurses have a misconception about nursing theory, in that they believe it should guide their practice to the point where they subscribe to one or the other to be a nurse.
Nursing theory also acts to inform us of things that are patterns in patients, such as reactions to stress or new dx, etc. They seem common-sense now, but before they were documented, we never really knew.
Nursing theory I believe is essential to entry level professional practice as a Bachelor's prepared nurse, and is absolutely essential in graduate nursing studies.

Jef Raskin - Humbug: Nursing Theory
Nursing educators should realize that it makes no sense to claim that there is a single theory of nursing, although the overarching goal of nurses’ professional practice – to improve the wellbeing of their patients – underlies all the other activities.
Nursing theorists also tend to avoid crucial experiments which could jeopardize the theory in the rare cases where the theory is coherent enough to permit testing; or, as noted for therapeutic touch, reinterpret the theory to make it impossible to test.
Nursing theory, as we have seen, is built on undefined jargon and unfalsifyable hypotheses, it is a structure of self-perpetuating myths taken on faith by its practitioners.

Nursing theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nursing theory is the term given to the body of knowledge that is used to support nursing practice.
Almost all nursing models are used to produce a document known as a care plan that is used to determine a patient's treatment by nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals and auxiliary workers.
Nurses quickly realised that treating patients based upon their disease rather than making a holistic assessment was not a satisfactory way of attending patient care.

So nursing as a science is using the word as a noun, but Rogers also stated that she believed that nursing is an art, and in that case the word should be used as a verb.
Cowling (1990) also stated that the "focus of nursing is unitary human beings in mutual process with their environment" and that nursing intervention would be to "create ways in which the client might become more aware of his or her field and collaborate with the nurse in proposing and using patterning strategies".
Her own nursing education and career did not seem to bear direct relevance to the development of the Science of Unitary Human Beings, but it is interesting to examine the impact and influences of other theorists and disciplines in the development of the framework.

 Nursing theory - NursingWiki
Nursing models can be used to produce a document known as a care plan that is used to document a patient's treatment plan as set by nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals and auxiliary workers.
For instance, if a patient comes from a different culture than the nurse, the nurse who is an expert(level 5) in the Response to Diversity competency would be able to evaluate her own biases and beliefs, respond to and anticipate the needs of the patient.
However, this misses the point of a nursing model, which is to drive research, innovation and change, to connect theory with practice, but not to be practice.
