  Earth Nutation Visualized
Nutation is a small cyclical motion superimposed upon the steady 26,000-year precession of the Earth's axis of rotation.
It is mainly caused by the gravitational effect of the 18.6-year rotation period of the Moon's orbit.
Nutation graphed here is divided into components along (longitude) and perpendicular (obliquity) to the ecliptic -- not the Earth's equator.

What is the difference between nutation and precession of the Earth?
Isaac Newton, and others since his day, have shown that the Earth's precession is caused by the gravity of the Moon and Sun acting on the oblateness of the Earth.

What is Nutation ?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nutation is, in astronomy, a small irregularity in the precession of the equinoxes.
Nutation (Latin nutare, "to nod") superimposes a small oscillation, with a period of 18.6 years and an amplitude of 9.2 seconds of arc, upon this great slow movement.
The cause of nutation lies chiefly in the fact that the plane of the Moon's orbit around the Earth is tilted by about 5º from the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

Nutation - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Nutation is a slight irregular motion (etymologically a "nodding") in the axis of rotation of a planet, due to the fact that the tidal forces which cause precession of the equinoxes vary over time so that the speed of precession is not constant.
These items are affected both by precession of the equinoxes and nutation, and thus depend on the theories applied to precession and nutation, and on the date used as a reference date for the coordinate system.
In simpler terms, nutation (and precession) values are important in observation from Earth for calculating the apparent positions of astronomical objects.

Nutation is a slight irregular motion (etymologically a "nodding") in the axis of rotation of a largely axially symmetric object, such as a gyroscope or a planet.
The nutation of a planet is due to the fact that the tidal forces which cause the precession of the equinoxes vary over time so that the speed of precession is not constant.
The principal term of nutation is due to the regression of the moon's nodal line and has the same period of 6798 days (18.6 years).

Nutation driver circuit 100 includes a dither generator 102 and a power amplifier 104, which, in a simplified embodiment of the present invention, can apply a constant amplitude signal (such as a sine wave) to the nutation driver circuit (magnets 38, 40 and respective coils 42, 44).
In the preferred embodiment, the nutation driver circuit 100 is configured to compensate for any drift in the characteristics of coupler 34 to ensure that fiber core 20 oscillates in a circular manner at the desired frequency (which in the case of the resonant fiber nutator is at or near the mechanical resonance).

nutation - Encyclopedia.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
nutation in astronomy, a slight wobbling motion of the earth's axis.
The causes of nutation are similar to those of the precession of the equinoxes, involving the varying attraction of the moon on the earth's equatorial bulge.
However, the period of the motion is only 18.6 years, the same as that of the precession of the moon's nodes, as opposed to the nearly 26,000-year period of the precession of the equinoxes.

 NUTATION DRIVE
The nutator carries radially mounted conical camrollers that engage between cams on the rotor and stator.
Nutation is imparted to the nutator through the center support bearing by the fixed angle of its mounting on the input shaft.
During nutation the nutator is held from rotating by the stator, which transmits the reaction forces to the housing.

Nutation, as described by Kapandji, is the anterior inferior motion of the sacral base.
This nutation and counter-nutation motion of the sacrum is a pivoting type of motion, so that when the base moves forward, the sacral apex (inferior part of the sacrum) moves posteriorly.
According to nutation principles, this process does render support to the lower lumbar region, that is, the process of creating a bilateral AS fixation.

 Precession and Nutation
It is a common misconception that precession is caused by the Sun and nutation is caused by the Moon.
In fact the Moon is responsible for two-thirds of the precession, and, while it is true that much of the complex detail of the nutation is a reflection of the intricacies of the lunar orbit, there are nonetheless important solar terms in the nutation.
The models for precession and nutation come from a combination of observation and theory, and are subject to continuous refinement.

A consideration on the name: nutation is more generally known as the small amplitude, wobbling motion of the Earth axis, in its 25700 year long precession around the north ecliptical pole.
The motion is the same, the difference being that for the Earth the oscillatory perturbation (being due to the non collinearity of the angular momentum and the principal axes of the Earth moment of inertia) is non resonant with the main Larmor frequency.
The different appearance of nutation close and far from resonance are also illustrated by the monochromats in the numerical simulation of the nutation, (Fig.

Nutation dampers are used to dampen the undesirable set of forces correspondent with spinning bodies known collectively as “nutation.” This nutation, or wobble, when not properly dampened, causes erratic behavior of the spinning body.
Glass nutation dampers are fabricated with customer-specified single or multiple races that contain a finite amount of appropriate high-density liquid.
Metal nutation dampers are manufactured with single and dual races with customer-specified race height, width parameters, and fluid fill weights.

Sloshing produces forces and torques that accentuate the spacecraft nutation and are the main cause of excessive nutation.
The magnitude of the nutation is measured by the cone angle, which is the angle between the actual direction of the spacecraft's spin axis and its desired direction (to be precise, the direction of its angular momentum vector); in effect, the spacecraft is tilted slightly with respect to its desired flight direction.
The sum of the rotational rates of the upper and lower pulleys is equal to the spacecraft spin rate (neglecting the small effect of the upper frame tilt), and the nutation frequency (that is, the frequency of the tank's up-and-down, to-and-fro motion) is equal to the rotational rate of the upper motor pulley.

 nutation
The chief cause of nutation is the Moon moving in an orbit that is inclined (by 5°) to the ecliptic.
This lunar nutation amounts to a +/- 9" back-and-forth jiggling of Earth's poles every 18.6 years (the time it takes for the Moon's orbit to walk around to the same relative position again).
The net result is that, instead of describing a perfectly circular path in the sky, every 25,800 years or so, due to precession, the precessional path of Earth's axis is more like the crinkly shape of a cooky-cutter.

IAG/IUGG WG on Non Rigid Earth Nutation Theory
The last nutation model adopted by the IAU (International Astronomical Union) in 1980 is the nutation series built, on the one hand, on Wahr's transfer function for the nutations of an oceanless elastic Earth (Wahr, 1981), and on the other hand, on Kinoshita's rigid-Earth precession-nutation series (Kinoshita, 1977; Kinoshita et al., 1979).
The model is the next generation of Wahr's nutation model (it uses an upgraded version of the same program) but still suffers from a lack of dissipation in the core with associated lack of Free Core Nutation (FCN) damping (remaining difference in the out-of-phase part of the retrograde annual nutation of about 0.4 mas.
The theoretical nutation amplitudes are obtained from a dynamical system of four coupled linear differential equations, and a least-quares fit to nutation amplitudes is determined using VLBI.

Nutation series from the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) were extracted from the file usn2002c.eops obtained by anonymous ftp (ftp://cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov/vlbi /ivsproducts/eops).
Since, in the Earth frame, the free core nutations are closely rigid-body rotations of the outer fluid core with respect to a nearly stationary mantle at close to a retrograde diurnal period, their ring downs, in combination with simple Ekman boundary layer theory, provide direct measures of viscosity at the top of the core.
While the free core nutations have now rung down to nearly unobservable levels, at the outset of the observations in 1979, the newly observed Prograde Free Core Nutation, predicted by Jiang (1993), had an amplitude in the GSFC data as high as 62% of the dominant RFCN.
