Nute Gunray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gunray cleverly escapes, making fools out of his pursuers, but his victory is shortlived when he realizes he has forgotten his prized Mechno Chair, which he uses to communicate with Darth Sidious and General Grievous.
Sidious contacted Gunray, who was now the leader of the remaining separatist forces, and the other CIS leaders in their new hidden base on Mustafar and ordered them to disarm and deactivate their remaining droid reserves - the war was over.
Gunray's name is often considered to be a pun on the names of Republican leaders Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan; his first name being a pun on the word newt and his last name a reversal of ray gun, which sounds like "Reagan".

In The Phantom Menace he was the only member of Gunray's inner circle who had encountered a Jedi Knight prior to the invasion of Naboo (and the fact that he walked with an obvious limp much of the time suggests the encounter was not a pleasant one).
When Viceroy Gunray was on Geonosis to sign the treaty that would combine the Trade Federation's droid armies with those of the Techno Union, Libkath accompanied him.
Originally, Rune Haako was scripted to appear at Nute Gunray's side in Attack of the Clones (as he had in The Phantom Menace), but according to Lucasfilm, the mask used for Rune Haako had been misplaced.

Invasion/Battle of Naboo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray and his advisors asked permission from Darth Sidious to begin deploying their forces and occupy Naboo until the trade dispute was resolved in their favor.
Sidious gave Gunray his permission, clearly guiding the attack from behind the scenes when in fact he was secretly the same man who was up for the office of Chancellor of the Republic and so Sidious was in fact manipulating both sides.
The battle took place in 32 BBY and is depicted in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and it ended with the deactivation of the Trade Federation's droid army and expulsion from Naboo to face the judgment of the Galactic Republic Senate on Coruscant.

Star Wars: Databank | Gunray, Nute
Once Naboo was under siege, Gunray attempted to force the planet's monarch, Queen Amidala, to sign a treaty that would legitimize the occupation.
Gunray was one of them, though he made his allegiance to the newly formed Confederacy of Independent Systems contingent on the assassination of Padmé Amidala.
Gunray grew tired of the war, and the visions of riches and conquest promised by the Separatists' secret benefactor, Darth Sidious, would not salve his aches for peace.

Another reason for Gunray being branded a coward is because of his inability to immediately kill Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in TPM.
Well, a) it probably didn't occur to him due to the stress of the situation, b) he probably heard exagerrated stories about Jedi prowess (like that Clone Wars cartoon, ha ha) and decided not to incur their wrath till absolutely necessary and c) he was a businessman, not a soldier.
