The CN series used all nuvistors except for the crystal oscillator tube and were made for the 6 meter, 2 meter, and 1.25 meter bands as well as for other bands including the commercial and satellite bands.
The Nuvistor was originally developed by RCA to be used as the r.f.
The Nuvistor tubes excelled at VHF and UHF because of their small size, and low power consumption (for hollow state devices.) as well as being designed for low noise figure.

 Nuvistor
The nuvistor is a type of vacuum tube announced by RCA in 1959.
Making nuvistors requires special equipment, since there is no intubation to pump gases out of the envelope.
Instead, the entire structure is assembled, inserted into its metal envelope, sealed and processed in a large vacuum chamber with simple robotic devices.

 AnaLog on Nuvistors
The Nuvistor was heralded as a threat to the transistor; they were initially attractive because they handled momentary overloads better and they were higher impedance devices than the transistors of 1959 (those advantages disappeared with improvements in semiconductors).
Thousands of Nuvistors were used in TV tuners in the 1960's, and many were in fact used in military and industrial equipment (prior to the commercial availability of FETs, some were used as high impedance input stages in otherwise solid state equipment) (see our Vintage Oscilloscopes page).
Nuvistors were characterized for satisfactory operation to 350° C, explaining why some logging tool manufacturers continued to use them up into the 1980's.

 About the Nuvistor Triode
Nuvistors, being in the tube family, are high-impedance devices--circuit components are generally less expensive.
The Nuvistor, a miniature metal-envelope tube, was another major advance in vacuum-tube technology, following on the heels of the cold-cathode tube.
Not only was the nuvistor found in high performance VHF receivers it was also used in the popular Tektronix oscilloscopes of the 60s in their wideband Y amplifiers were it happily co-existed with transistors.

TNT PreAmble N - DIY nuvistor stereo preamplifier [English]
Nuvistors were the last born in the classic tube world: designed when the transistors were already taking the lead, they are miniaturized thermionic tubes in a metal case.
Unfortunately, the nuvistor data sheets show characteristics that are not so ideal in terms of linearity, and in facts the circuit did not prove so exceptional with regards to measures.
Even for nuvistors, special care is suggested for the power supply on the audio board: two paralleled capacitors, a 3300uF electrolytic (more of a reservoir than a real filter component...) and a 0.47uF paper in oil, are placed near the nuvistors.

The 6CW4 is a triode with 6.3 volts for filament and 70 volts for the plate voltage and is very small only 2 cm high including the pins and 2 cm in diameter but since the envelope is metallic it became very hot during operation and you cannot touch it with your finger !
I have succesfully used the above downconverters for 144 and 432 MHz and I have the technical manuals of it with complete schematic diagrams and if you are interested I can send it to you as a scanned copy.
Also I have few 6CW4 for spare but I believe that actually the most difficult part to find as new is the socket for a Nuvistor.

Stereophile: Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 300 power amplifier
Enclosing its vacuum in metal rather than glass, the Nuvistor was designed as a long-lived, highly linear device with low heat, low microphony, and low noise---all of which it needed to have any hope of competing in the brave new solid-state world emerging when RCA introduced it in the 1960s.
With four Nuvistors (two per channel) also in each amplifier's front-end circuitry, and a spare set on hand for each amp as well, that's a total of at least 8000 Nuvistors procured by Mr.
With the Nuvistor's life expectancy of approximately 100,000 hours, Musical Fidelity figures that, with the second set of Nuvistors in waiting, the life expectancy of the limited-edition preamp and amp should be 25 to 30 years.

You make an assumption in your question that the Nuvistor is the key to the sound and value differences between C12 and C12A.
The Nuvistor is only one third (my guess) of the story, the other two thirds of the significant sound difference between C12 and C12A is in the amplifier circuitry:
In the case of the C12, the gain is picked up at the plate of the tube, in the case of the C12A a “cathode-follower” circuit is used.

 The Nuvistor
Although Nuvistors are really designed for professional andindustrial applications, they may, nevertheless, prove of interest to the experimenter.
The first is arranged in the earthed-cathode mode with leaky-grid biasing, as in Figure 2, while the second is wired in an earthed-grid circuit with the amplified signal tapped off L2 at a suitable point to match the cathode circuit of the second valve.
Cascaded circuits are rarely required, however, for a single-stage Nuvistor circuit operating in front of a television tuner will almost certainly make a 2-3dB improvement in the noise figure while also providing a gain up to 40 or 50 times, depending upon the bandwidth and how well the amplifier is constructed and neutralised.

It shared the IF and multiplex adaptor stages that were used in the 312 and featured a front end that when implemented in the 344B with FETs instead of nuvistors, would serve as the basis for all Scott tuners post 312D.

The Nuvistor is a thimble-sized unit (enclosed in a metal envelope rather than glass) that promised high-reliability, low-noise, and low-power operation.
Designed mainly for military and test-equipment applications, the Nuvistor bridged the gap between valves and transistors to ease the transition from hollow-state to solid-state.

It is well known that certain Field Effect Transistors exhibit similar characteristics to triode valves and in particular allow the very high input impedance circuitry otherwise only achievable with valves.
Our aim here was to replicate as closely as possible the natural and open clarity we are able to achieve with the Nu-Vista but utilising a contemporary FET.
The JFET we eventually selected was chosen after extensive measuremnet and listening tests of a very large number of possible alternatives for its very close relation to the 6CW4 Nuvistor in terms of both its sonic fingerprint and measured performance.
