Sri Lankan trains are divided into three classes, all of which are acceptable, and the particular Podi Menike train from Colombo that we picked up in Kandy has some excellent first class seats in an observation car that is attached at the rear of the train with both sideways and backward panoramic views.
The only place to stay in Nuwara Eliya is the Hill Club, which as it's name implies is still very much a club, but whilst at certain times of the year it is reserved for members only, at other times it opens it's doors to guests thereby adding to the club funds.
Visits can be made and the Labookellie factory owned by Mackwoods is ideally placed at about 40 minutes from Nuwara Eliya and directly beside the road.
