Nyanza Province is one of the eight provinces in the country.
It is bordered by Western Province to the North Rift to the East and Republc of Tanzania and Uganda to the South and West respectively.
The province is inhabited by the Luos, Gusii, Kuria, Luyhas and Abasuba tribes.

Nyanza Province of Kenya, on Lake Victoria, is one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces outside Nairobi.
Nyanza includes part of the eastern edge of Lake Victoria and is inhabited predominantly by the Luo.
The province derives its name from the Sukuma, a Bantu-speaking tribe living on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Victoria, to whom the word Nyanza means a large mass of water.

Coast Province was a clear KANU stronghold in 1997 as was North Eastern Province.
North Eastern Province is considered difficult and remote election-wise as the distances are vast and the level of literacy generally low.
The Luo are the dominant group in Nyanza Province, largely dominating eight of the 12 districts.

Further analysis suggests that poverty trends are dynamic.  In 1994, poverty was most prevalent in North Eastern Province (58%) followed by Eastern (57%) and Coast (55%) Provinces.
Both Nyanza (42%) and Central (32%) provinces had the lowest incidences of poverty.
Nyanza province recorded the highest prevalence level of 63 percent followed by Coast province with 62 percent.

Nyanza Province, in the western part of Kenya, has seen a high level of malaria cases that have resulted in a number of children being hospitalized.
Over 900,000 children were immunised in Nyanza Province from 8-12 July during the integrated countrywide mass measles immunisation campaign.
The Kenyan Red Cross is involved in 17 districts, including Nyanza Province covering Siaya, Kisumu, Rachuonyo; Coast Province covering Kilifi, Lamu, Malindi, Kwale and Mombasa; Rift Valley Province covering West Pokot, Kajiado, Bureti and Kericho; Western Province covering Busia, Bungoma, Lugari and Vihiga; and Machakos in the Eastern Province.

Nyanza leaders are permanently camped at press conferences in Nairobi while the people who elected them are stuck in the disaster that has now become Luo Nyanza.
In a recent interview concerning the falling education standards in Nyanza, leading ODM contender Raila Odinga proudly proclaimed : “We are not responsible for the poor performance, politicians don’t teach primary school classes” such a cavalier attitude toward the people of Nyanza shouldn’t have been the response from someone aspiring for the presidency of Kenya.

Nyanza Province in Western Kenya has the highest rates of HIV in the country: 18 percent of women and 12 percent of men are infected with the virus.
Indeed, a study in Kisumu (the capital of Nyanza) found strikingly high HIV prevalence rates among married girls (33 percent) compared to rates among unmarried sexually active girls (22 percent) (abstract).
In collaboration with local partners and PATH, the Population Council is mounting a large-scale educational campaign in Nyanza on the dangers of early marriage, establishing clubs for married girls, and promoting voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV among newly married couples or those contemplating marriage.

It was surprising to note that the effect of mother's education on infant and child health was insignificant based on all indices used as indicators of child health, while the effect of father's education was significant.
This unexpected finding may suggest that in Nyanza province, it is men who are probably mainly responsible for decision making in the households, including decision making regarding child care and child feeding practises.
Nyanza province is one of the regions of the country facing most serious problems relating to women's status and health status of infants and children.

Police in the tension-ridden southwestern province of Nyanza, known as Trans Mara, said a gang of Masai men attacked the village of Ekona Yangare about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Kisii, murdering the members of an ethnic Kisii family with cutlasses and wounding four other people.
Police in Nyanza province also said one police officer and an unknown number of civilians were injured in election clashes in the lakeside town of Homa Bay.
Nyanza has had several violent incidents in recent weeks, and Moi declared it a security zone until after the vote.

The KOEE Director says the Nyanza eco-schools project and others to follow will be implemented through development of school environmental policies, localising curriculum and learning resources, promoting school and community cooperation, initiating small-scale projects, and promotion of networking among schools.

Nyanza as Kenya’s poorest province with poverty levels ranging from 65 to 80 percent.

For members of the Luo community who inhabit the Lake Victoria region of Nyanza Province in western Kenya, customs like wife inheritance and widow cleansing threaten to extinguish a vast majority of the population.
Alarmingly, the rate varies by as much as 30 percent across the province: In Suba district, for example, it is as high as 41 percent, according to Lennah Nyabiega, a health ministry official in charge of facilitating access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the province.
According to a study carried out in Gauteng Province in South Africa and whose results were presented at the 3rd International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment in Brazil in July 2005, male circumcision showed promising results in reducing HIV acquisition.

Friday,two Members of Parliament from Nyanza province attributed the declining education standards in the area to high poverty levels.
Nyando MP Eric Nyamunga and his Gem counterpart Jakoyo Midiwo said whereas the province had high irrigation potential, floodwaters were not being harnessed to improve on agricultural development.
Midiwo also blamed declining education standards in the province to lack of adequate facilities and teachers and called on the Government to address the issue.
