I've been studying the KGVI Nyasaland 10/ recently, SG 142 and 142a, and have made some observations about distinguishing these items that may be useful to others.
First, a review of some of the most-used sources reveals that there is a lot of controversy when it comes to describing the colors of the head and duty plates and the paper.
It should be noted that Potter-Shelton's date of February 1945 for the second printing has been discredited and there is general agreement that the printing took place in December of 1937 or January of 1938.

In 1927, the ratio of white to fl was 38,200 to 922,000 in Southern Rhodesia, 4,000 to 1,000,000 in Northern Rhodesia, and 1,700 to 1,350,000 in Nyasaland.
It was, though, to be largely Nyasaland and its African population where the impetus for destabilization of the CAF leading to its dissolution arose.

In 1883, a consul of the British Government was accredited to the "Kings and Chiefs of Central Africa," and in 1891, the British established the British Central Africa Protectorate, by 1907, the Nyasaland Protectorate (Nyasa is the Yao word for "lake").
During the 1950s, pressure for independence increased when Nyasaland was joined with Northern and Southern Rhodesia in 1953 to form the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved on December 31, 1963, and Malawi became a fully independent member of the (formerly British) Commonwealth on July 6, 1964.
