The county’s objective is to prepare properties in the target communities for reuse, thereby increasing the amount of land attractive for new commercial and industrial development.

Nye County must derive its tax base, and therefore its ability to provide services to its residents, from this very small percent of its total land mass.
One anecdote arising from the huge size of the county: When I was a prosecutor in the district attorney's office in Tonopah, I realized that south county residents called for jury duty in Tonopah had gotten up probably by 4 or 430 a.m.

Employee morale plummeted during Owens' brief tenure, particularly due to her role as the county's chief negotiator in contract talks between Nye and its two unions, the Nye County Employees Association and the Nye County Law Enforcement Association.
Bill Becht of the Nye County Sheriff's Office recently said Owens was out of control and was using "union busting" tactics to destroy the associations.
