The small regional town on the River Elbe (Labe) of Nymburk, population 15,500, was founded by the Premysl king Otakar II in 1275 on the site of an ancient fortification to guard an important ford over the river.
When the Luxembourgs took the Czech throne in 1310, they also bestowed their attention and favour on the fortress town, perhaps because the town played a part in the dynasty taking the throne in the first place.
Royal courts and assemblies were sometimes held after that in Nymburk, and John and Eliska's son Charles IV also contributed to the development of the town.
