 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Magnoliidae -- Spring 1999
He places Cabombaceae and Nymphaeaceae in their own superorder, Nymphaeanae, positioning the taxon after the Magnolianae and before the Rafflesianae.
Chemically the family is unlike members of the subclass, and according to the rbcL data, the family is isolated totally from the Magnoliidae.
The distinction between Nupharaceae (5-14 sepals, small petals and exarillate seeds) and Nymphaeaceae (4 or 5 sepals, larger petals and arillated seeds) seems on the surface to be less worthy of family distinction.

 Cultivar Registry Information
The importance of horticultural taxonomy is in the resolution of the often complicated identification and nomenclatural problems that arise as a consequence of makeup of the contributing groups; specialist amateurs, the nursery trade and plant societies.
Their purpose is to serve local, national and international horticulture through recording and clarifying areas of confusion in the naming and identification of cultivated plants in the these families.
The Nymphaeaceae registration page is located at the George Safford Torrey Herbarium website, or contact Andrew Doran for further information.

Some authors place it in the Nymphaeaceae while others include it in a separate family, Cabombaceae.
The Nymphaeaceae are closely related to the monocots as evidenced by monocolpate pollen, no cambium, no true vessels, and scattered vascular bundles.
Distinguishing characteristics: Herbaceous aquatics with long petiolate leaves that float on the water surface; gynoecium syncarpous with 5-35 variously united carpels; fruit a berry.

 Nuphar advena
Reason for Sampling: Some recent studies have suggested that Nymphaeaceae + Amborella are sister to all other flowering plants (Barkman et al., 2000).
Whereas some water lilies have numerous, spirally arranged parts and undifferentiated perianths, reconstructions of floral evolution suggest that these characteristics are derived (Zanis et al., in press).
We have chosen Nuphar advena because of its phylogenetic position near the base of Nymphaeaceae (Les et al., 1999).
