Interactive Dig Sagalassos - Hadrianic Nymphaeum
As part of the general refurbishment of the Lower Agora toward the beginning of the second century A.D., another nymphaeum with an ornamented facade that is more than 20 m long and two stories high, was built on a terrace immediately above and behind the Trajanic one.
This second fountain was built in the second half of the reign of emperor Hadrian (A.D. 128-138), possibly during one of the emperors' voyages through Asia Minor.

So an involvement of this man, as one of the heirs, in the construction of the Hadrianic nymphaeum cannot be excluded, especially as this must have occurred during his lifetime.
It is comparable with the early Christian burials (tentatively dated to the seventh century) dug in the earthquake debris on the western slope of the Lower Agora and found in previous years.
Along the street running south of the Hadrianic nymphaeum, lying upside down against the latter's stairway, we discovered the central part (0.91 m high) of an inscribed pedestal.

Ninfeo Giustiniano (Justinian Nymphaeum) / Fountains / The villa / Home - Villa Borghese
The nymphaeum is the only surviving feature from the many grottoes in the Villa Giustiniani, built from 1592 by Giuseppe Giustiniani and purchased by Camillo Borghese in 1820.
The nymphaeum is in the form of a large niche lined with Tartars, stalactites and rocaille.
It is surrounded by rusticated tufa ashlar that was made at the same time that the containing wall was built at the start of the twentieth century.

This well–preserved Nymphaeum (water fountain) is located at the north end of the city, at the southern foot of the acropolis, and at the head of the 985 ft. [300 m.] long street (cardo) that ran from here south to the Hellenistic gate.
The Nymphaeum was fed by an aqueduct, and water poured forth from under the reclining headless water god (possibly, Cestrus - also the name of the river to the east of Perge) located in the center of the picture.
The water continued to flow in this channel, southward down the 985 ft. [300 m.] long street (cardo) that ran from here to the Hellenistic gate at the southern edge of the city.

The Whoopee Club will be creating an aquatic paradise in the public baths in Langley for their spectacular show ‘Nymphaeum’.

In proximity to the Nymphaeum, in the large room with apse, they were found some tombs with human remains, datable to the III - IV century A.D. One of these tombs, very characteristic, was the one of a child who died in tender age and was placed in an amphora.
Shortly before the fall of the Empire, in fact, the Nymphaeum was violently deprived of the polychrome marbles and of some statues among which the one of Polyphemus.
The definitive abandonment and the consequent sinking of the Nymphaeum with the relative collapse of the vault must be imputed to a virulent recrudescence of the bradyseism in the IV century A.D.

Between the 2.38 m projecting lateral wings, the nymphaeum's back wall was composed of five niches: three rectangular ones alternating with two rounded niches.
At the west end of the Hadrianic nymphaeum, we exposed the western extremity of the Odeion's facade (late Flavian to Trajanic) behind the fountain over five ashlar courses.

Indeed, a section of the pavement that extends from the area we excavated to the nymphaeum structure was completely demolished.
The forum was in use for a long time, and it seems that its later walls testify to the fact that they were in use up to the mid-8th century, or the end of the Umayyad period (see the numismatic and pottery reports herein).
It seems that remains of this structure, which remained in part in the area and were preserved to a height of two layers, are related to the structure south of it; that is, the nymphaeum.

In the beginning of the week, the archaeological team exposing the Hadrianic Nymphaeum on the terrace above the Lower Agora unearthed the central part of the staircase.
We wonder whether or not the very plain architecture identifies the block as a building element of the very smooth Trajanic nymphaeum on the Lower Agora that was reused in late antiquity when the former had already been dismantled for the construction of the Severan fountain in front of it.
In front of the collapsed lateral west wing, the middle section of a naked youth of rather small dimensions was discovered among earthquake debris.

These Greek colonies were mostly settled by Milesians, Panticapaeum in the 7th or early in the 6th century B. C., but Phanagoria (c.540 B. C.) was a colony of Teos, and Nymphaeum had some connection with Athens — at least it appears to have been a member of the Confederacy of Delos.

During the second half of the week, the Lower Agora North team started concentrating on the Hadrianic nymphaeum on a terrace above and north of the two fountains on the Lower Agora's north side.
From previous studies, it is clear that the nymphaeum had two stories of an aediculated façade, and we have found elaborately carved parts of its entablature and of decorated corner acroteria.
From the first day, we found pieces of statuary and a base for a marble statue dedicated by his heirs, in accordance with his will, to Tiberius Claudius Piso, the first Roman knight of Sagalassos and the man who introduced the Klareian games in the city (see Upper Agora, August 10-16).
