Noyogen Senzaki (1876-May 7, 1958) was a Rinzai Zen monk who was one of the 20th century's leading proponents of Zen Buddhism in the United States.
Nyogen was becoming disconcerted with the institutional practices of the monastery at the time, and turned to books as a means of release.
Nyogen stayed in the USA for the rest of his life, with the exception of a trip in 1955 back to Japan to visit his friend Soen Nakagawa.

Nyogen Senzaki was born on the Kamchatka Peninsula in northeastern Siberia.
In 1905, when Nyogen Senzaki came to live in America and learned English, he not only translated his own poetry but also the poetry of Zen masters like Jakushitsu and his own teacher Soyen Shaku.
When we carefully observe the life of Nyogen Senzaki, his style of teaching and his personality, we cannot help but be impressed with how different he was from both the ancient masters and the modern teachers of Zen.

NYOGEN SENZAKI was one of the first Japanese teachers to come to America and stay here, living in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and, from 1941 to 1945, in an internment camp in Wyoming with tens of thousands of other Japanese-Americans.
The poems included were all originally written by Senzaki in Chinese, and he himself translated them into English.
Also included are dharma talks, essays, Senzaki's last words, and a letter to him from his friend Soen Nakagawa Roshi upon hearing of his death.

This collection of 100 Koans, was first compiled by Genro in the 18th century, and then is commented on by his disciple Fugai, and then by the Japanese Zen Master Senzaki who first brought Zen to America in the 20th century.
And having written this, I am worthy of a blow, and perhaps you the reader of this review another blow, for there are many blows from the master to the student here.
Nyogen says "American Zen is running sideways writing books, lecturing, referring to theology, psychology, and what not".
