I like Uhura and always thought more emphasis should be paid to her but for all intents and purposes she was ignored.
It is unfortunate that she was not a major character on the series; however, Uhura did get the first interracial kiss on television (with Captain Kirk no less) and proved to the world that mankind can overcome racial bigotry in the future.
