The films produced in Chicago and/or distributed by Chicago companies were increasingly important nationally and internationally as U.S. firms tried to compete with imported films for domination of film screens.
Several “race film” companies (companies run largely by African Americans who made films for a fl audience) were formed during the silent film era in Chicago as well.
All of the race film firms were profoundly undercapitalized and suffered from the lack of strong distribution networks.
The film was chosen to open the Rio Festival and went into general release on October 26, 2001 in Brazil.
The film was shot over a 12 week schedule on location in London, Rio De Janeiro and Portugal.
The transition from printed word to screen appears to have mellowed the most objectionable elements of the novel for me, which is to say that I find it easier to deal with the sexually naïve Holmes fumbling through foreplay on screen than having to read graphic textual depictions.

By any reasonable standard, the Marquis was indeed perverse (the film alludes to de Sade's fetish for mixing violence with sex).
Consider another recent film, Fight Club; some viewers -- as well as many folks who didn't bother to watch the flick -- interpreted the story as an indefensible glorification of violence, while others construed that same tale as a powerful anti-fascism statement.
Of course, any "message film" is only as good as the sum of its parts, and Geoffrey Rush (Shine), Kate Winslet (Titanic), Joaquin Phoenix (To Die For), and Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules) finely complement Kaufman's skillful, energetic direction and Wright's entertaining and daring -- but never preachy -- script.

The film is also concerned with such perceptual phenomena as color-space, "false tones" caused by varying fl-white alternations of simultaneously seen rhythms set up by multiple repetitive actions, and the use of image outlines as "containers" for other imagery.
Much of the film was shot in the Owens Valley and in an old office building in downtown LA and is metaphorically about the exchange of energy between two places.
It is also about water, in all of its states, and about cyclical motion: the planets, the tides, the implied rotation of the camera on its axis, and the repetitive actions of the performers.

Star Wars in 1977 is considered by some to be the first "high concept" film, although others feel the first was Steven Spielberg's Jaws.

Lucas was fined by the Directors Guild of America for refusing to have a standard title sequence in his Star Wars films.
