O Lucky Man! - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
O Lucky Man! (1973) is a surreal British film directed by Lindsay Anderson.
In O Lucky Man!, Travis progresses from coffee salesman (working for sleazy boss Mr Duff) to personal assistant to Sir James Burgess, an evil mastermind.
During his journey, Travis learns the amoral lesson, reinforced by numerous songs in the soundtrack by Alan Price, that he must abandon his principles in order to succeed, but unlike the other characters he meets he must retain a detached idealism that will allow him to distance himself from the evils of the world.

 O Lucky Man! 1973
O Lucky Man is a huge, rambling, mess of a picture, following the trials and tribulations of Michael Travis (McDowell) as he makes his way through life, going from wide-eyed trainee coffee salesman to framed tycoon to wide-eyed and hopelessly naive philanthropist.
Whilst there he watches a wronged man (Crowden again) take a dive from the office window, pulling Sir James' assistant with him, and finds himself with a new job.
Mirren's father is Sir James (Ralph Richardson), a huge business magnate, and Travis uses his relationship with her to inveigle his way into the man's office.

One characteristic feature of O Lucky Man! is not conveyed by the script: I mean the continual reappearance of actors in different roles.
When David Sherwin and I had finished the original draft of O Lucky Man! we both I bought it read pretty well.
This idea came with the writing of the script—so that Professor Stewart, for instance, was hardly imagined before he had the face, figure and peculiar vibrancy of Graham Crowden, and of course it would have to be Rachel Roberts, harking back to earlier triumphs, as the aggressive, defeated housewife who decides that she's had enough.

Movie Review - O Lucky Man - eFilmCritic
But the best of these three is the middle, and the longest(and, not surprisingly, the one with Ralph Richardson and Helen Mirren), O LUCKY MAN! With every cast member except McDowell playing multiple parts, and a magnificent and quick three hours long, this film satirizes, uh, well, let's see:
After escaping the experiments, he tries to become the assistant to the richest, most evil man in London(also played by Richardson), only to be used as the fall guy in an illegal international deal.
In his trial, he doesn't go to jail, according to the judge, because he is guilty but because he lost the game; it is hinted, in other words, he is going to jail because the "proper sort" wouldn't get culled out thus, because they'd have more natural talent than to get caught.
