Born in Bombay the son of a civil servant, he was brought up in London and Hampshire by his maternal aunts due to the death of his mother in 1886 and his father in 1894.
Crawford was educated at Marlborough College and then Keble College, Oxford where he began reading literae humaniores but changed to geography.
In 1913 Crawford joined the Scoresby Routledge expedition to Easter Island but quarrelled with the principals and left before the expedition reached its destination.

Crawford’s Cavalry was assigned to Fagan’s Cavalry Division of the Trans-Mississippi Army, brigaded with Wright’s cavalry regiment and Poe’s and McMurtrey’s cavalry battalions.
Crawford’s Cavalry was included in the general surrender of the Trans-Mississippi Army on May 26, 1865.

D I R E C T I O N S
To get to the Cog Railway Base Station, you must drive up Base Road, which meets Route 302 just north of Crawford Notch in New Hampshire.  Fabyan's restaurant is on the northeast corner of the intersection, which is about a mile north of the Mt. Washington Hotel and 6 miles east of Twin Mountain.
If you're coming from Gorham, Jefferson Notch Road (gravel) meets Base Road from the north about half way to the station from Route 302.  However, this road is not recommended for vehicles without 4-wheel drive!  Also, Mt. Clinton Road (which shortcuts from Crawford Notch to Base Road) is only used for winter travel.
