On the 31st October 2005, O2 plc agreed to be taken over by the Spanish telco giant Telefónica with a cash offer of £17.7 billion (€26 billion) or £2 per share.
According to the merger announcement, O2 plc retained its name and continued to be based in the UK, keeping both the brand and the management team.

According to the takeover announcement, O2 will for the present retain its current brand and be run from the UK, however future integration of the group with Telefónica's own mobile phone brand, movistar, cannot be ruled out.

Mobile group O2 Ireland added 32,000 customers in the three months to the end of December, bringing its customer numbers to just over 1.6 million.
