Although convoys were introduced in the early part of the war for ships on the short cross-English Channel routes, partly because it was generally assumed that naval escort on a one-to-one ship base was necessary, it was assumed that trans-Atlantic protection would be impossible.
Convoys fell into two main categories, The so-called "operational" type were formed for specific missions, such as those run through the Mediterranean for the relief of Malta, and those, typically employing large fast ocean liners, for troop transportation.
Even if a convoy, as was sometimes the case, was accompanied by a specialised "rescue ship", escorts were often distracted from their primary role by the need to pick up survivors from sinking merchant ships.

The report has the heading "Analysis of an Attack by a U-boat on Convoy OG 47 on 21st December 1940" - the culprit was the Italian submarine Mocenigo (Agostini), and the Swedish Mangen (cargo of 1396 tons coal) was sunk with the loss of 8 lives.
The Convoy, which had been steering 153°, altered course 20° to port at 2100/21, and at the time of the attack was steering a steady course of 133° at 7 1/2 knots.

Despite the difficulties most convoys completed successfully, but of the 570 merchant ships which took part in the 28 separate convoys in 1941 on this homebound route 25 were lost, together with a further 5 stragglers.
Experience in the other direction (designated OG) could be a little different because Germany was denied the intelligence information on sailings available from agents in Spain for the homebound stretch - 1004 ships took part in 30 OG convoys in 1941, with 21 lost in convoy, though a further 34 losses were classified as stragglers.
