OLE for process control - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OLE for Process Control (OPC), is the original name for an open standards specification developed in 1996 by an industrial automation industry task force.
OPC is generally understood to stand for "OLE for Process Control", even though no page on the OPC Foundation website suggests that the letters "OPC" ever stood for anything, except for some content written by member companies about themselves.
OPC servers provide a method for many different software packages to access data from a process control device, such as a PLC or DCS.

Berkeley Process Control - About OPC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
OLE for Process Control (OPC) is a data interface standard that was created and is managed by the OPC Foundation, consisting of approximately 300 member companies.
The OPC standard is based primarily on Microsoft'sComponent Object Model (COM), providing plug-and-play functionality for compatibility with a host of software packages in the automation and process control space.
The OPC Foundation is dedicated to ensuring interoperability by creating and maintaining open specifications that standardize the communciation of acquired process data, alarm and event records, historical data, and batch data to multi-vendor enterprise systems and betweeen production devices.

OPC Ole for Process Control Protocol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Originally based on Microsoft's OLE COM (component object model) and DCOM (distributed component object model) technologies, the specification defined a standard set of objects, interfaces and methods for use in process control and manufacturing automation applications to facilitate interoperability.
OPC interface products are built once and reused many times, therefore, they undergo continuous quality control and improvement.
OPC Security specifies how to control client access to these servers in order to protect this sensitive information and to guard against unauthorized modification of process parameters.

Kepware Technologies - OLE for Process Control Overview
The OPC Foundation put forth the goal of developing a single client/server specification that would allow any vendor to develop software and applications that could share data in a fast, robust fashion, and do it in a way that would eliminate the proprietary schemes that forced these same vendors to duplicate development efforts.
A major goal of the OPC Foundation and the Data Access specification was to eliminate the need of client application vendors to develop their own proprietary set of communications drivers.
The OPC Item should be thought of as simply specifying the address of the data, not as the actual physical source of the data that the address references.
