		The last time I pontificated in these pages about OMFI and digital audio was over a year ago so it may be useful to consider what use it has been to us and the extent to which it is in current use.
		OMFI audio post production to date has largely been confined to TV; as far as I know, the only feature films done this way have used Avid equipment for obvious reasons.
		If we are to make OMFI work properly we must ensure that levels (hard to get wrong with a D-D transfer) are understood, sample rates are agreed, timebase is checked, and that we are getting true 16-bit (or better) audio and not some crummy compressed stuff.

	OLD MUTUAL FINANCIAL & INDUSTRIAL FUND
		Old Mutual Financial & Industrial Fund (OMFI) is one of a select few SA unit trusts to have established a record of consistency under the guidance of one fund manager, Johan Strydom, who assumed management of the fund in 1994.
		OMFI's portfolio contains 36 shares, of which 21 are in the Findi and comprise 83% of OMFI's equity exposure.
		OMFI's performance fate in the short to medium term will thus be very much a function of the behaviour of a small number of shares in the Findi.

		There are many variants of OMFI and all dubbing studios will have their preferred OMFI format, sample rates and choice of media.
		When using OMFI it’s a good idea to bring a printed copy of the edl in A mode as well as all the relevant sound rushes.

		OMFI is currently in use in both features and television, and media is routinely "OMF-ed" to sound editors and visual effects creators.
		Even with heavy effects dailies, by using the OMFI to import and update their effects sequences, they were able to return newly edited sequences back to ILM within 24 hours on a daily basis.
		Without OMFI, material routinely gets synced a second time by the sound department, which is not only time-consuming but the track never comes out precisely as the picture editor cut it.

		The OMF Interchange or Open Media Framework Interchange (OMFI) was proposed by AVID Technology as a file format, designed as a means by which audio, video, graphics and animation files can be easily exchanged with other applications, thus increasing the efficiency of the sound postproduction process.
		In the past when doing OMFI transfers it was important that the cut be separated to sequences no longer than 15 minute - eg 30min programme split in two 15 minute blocks/60 minutes into four.

		This means that once picture locks reels, an OMFI document can be exported from the Avid, imported directly into a digital audio workstation, and a new session created within seconds.
		This served two purposes: first, as a back-up for the audio media which we could use to restore our sound in the event that a drive went down (picture could be redigitized from the Beta SP telecine masters), and second, it allowed sound to prepare their dailies prior to turn over.
		Once we locked our reels, all I had to do was send the sound editors an OMFI document of each reel on a floppy disc or via e-mail.

	Workstation File-Format Interchange, Part 1
		The OMFI data structure uses a “container format” called Bento, which is the intellectual property of Apple Computer, a company that has never been keen on letting such intellectual property be placed in the public domain for use in a standard.
		In the early '90s, when OMFI was formulated, that certainly was not a problem, but these days, most every device in the signal chain is capable of dealing with 24-bit audio, so this seems a bit of a limitation.
		As one indication of how far off the plate OMFI has fallen at Avid is the fact that the formerly working link to the OMFI Website at www.omfi.org now goes to a “404 error — not found” page on the Avid Website.

		Copy the sequences to be transferred and place them in the Omfi bin.
		Don't put these on the drive that will be used to transfer the OMFI sequences.
		Give the omfi file a name that has no more than six characters, is lowercase, and ends in ".omf".

		When capture/import operation is over, the temporary files are moved as media files to the original (common for Avid machines) OMFI folder.
		In this folder you can find a media database file (.mdb), a .prm file which are for the respective Avid machine, and all media created on all Avid workstations.
		Since all media is stored in the original OMFI folder, media does not go offline.

		Do not move the OMFI Media Files folder that has just been consolidated on the target drive.
		The sequence that is pending export is now relinked to the media that has been consolidated to the target drive; relocating or hiding that media will bring it off-line, and the export will fail.

		However, nagging issues of dependable operation and OMFI as an unsuitable formal standard have resulted in some important new interchange file formats (and more cryptic names and acronyms with which to impress your friends).

		Have downloaded the demo version, and am trying to import an omfi export from a previous project on my avid (xpress pro HD v.5.0.2).
		Have exported the file as an omfi type 1, 48k, 16 bit, media embedded.
		Any help with this would be much appreciated, as I hear good things about the software, but I need the omfi transfer thing to work.

		I'm asking because I'd like to know the best way to export files out from Avid to raw data format that will eventually be turned to uncompressed media.
		OMFI is a wrapper for metadata to an exisiting JFIF media structure.
		It does not have mich bearing on the actual color space and quality since it only contains what you have set the quality for during cqpture, import, export, etc. If working at DV25, exporting to a TIFF or other graphic file format, the compressed DV25 material gets decompressed (to uncompressed media) then exported.

		Ideally I'd like to be able to use OMFI to get the final audio back into XDV, but it's not a deal breaker to have to export a WAV from Sonar and bring this into XDV.
