  Paper - Pursuing. . .
Omnimax, a modified form of Imax, is an even closer representation of natural vision, utilizing fisheye optics on both camera and projector.
Omnimax reproduces not only the image of reality but its three-dimensional spatial relationships to the camera/observer as well; the Omnimax 180 degree image is the least formalist frame in film history.
Trumbull's early impression of the Imax and Omnimax formats was that, while the images produced were "beautiful", the formats did not lend themselves to theatrical, dramatic forms of film-making because the image size confounds the formalism of montage: "It is difficult to edit from a single to a two-shot to a mastershot.

IMAX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The new system, that the San Diego Hall of Science called OMNIMAX, uses a fisheye lens on the camera that squeezes a highly distorted 180 degree field of view onto the 70mm IMAX film.
The lens is aligned below the center of the frame and most of the bottom half of the circular field falls beyond the edge of the film.
OMNIMAX wraps 180 degrees horizontally, 100 degrees above the horizon and 22 degrees below the horizon for a viewer at the center of the dome.

Omnimax film uses a fish-eye lens, however, to give the film more resolution in the center, where people direct their gaze most of the time, and less in the periphery.
When Omnimax films are produced conventionally, with a film camera, they are shot through the same fish-eye lens as for projection.
When Omnimax films are made by computer, the image must be pre-distorted by the inverse of the fish-eye lens' distortion.

 Salty Ham: Movies
The first time that I went to the OMNIMAX was probably on a Girl Scout outing to the "cool" downtown museum.
There were shots at the beginning that exploited the fact that you were watching the movie in the OMNIMAX venue and they made it feel as though you were in a flight simulator, traveling over the cliffs surrounding the river.
What really separates the OMNIMAX from the IMAX is that on the IMAX you can see movies in 3-D. First, let me express my displeasure for the circumstances of 3-D technology.

To help celebrate the Museum Center's 10th anniversary, The OMNIMAX is showing a giant-screen film festival featuring eight of the most popular OMNIMAX films shown in Cincinnati over the past 10 years.
OMNIMAX films tend to have a long shelf life, and the Museum Center owns a copy of every film they've shown over the years.
An OMNIMAX dome can't be converted into IMAX 3-D. Still, as long as the Museum Center offers the only large-format theater in town, it's safe to say that the theater will continue to be the popular draw it always has been with school groups, tourists and out-of-town guests.

The difference between the Imax format and the Omnimax format is that Imax movies are shown on a huge, flat screen in the way traditional movies are shown.
By contrast, Omnimax movies are shown on the curved roof of the giant theatre.
The downside with Omnimax is that some people feel a bit queasy after watching an Omnimax movie.

Omnimax theaters project film through a fisheye lens onto a hemispherical screen with the image covering 180 degrees horizontally and 135 degrees vertically.
For me the Omnimax film was the most exciting project to come along in years, but it was difficult to convey this enthusiasm to those controlling the computer resources.
Omnimax requires a resolution of about 2000x1500 at 24 bits per pixel, which amounts to 8.5 megabytes per frame.

It seems as though, more and more, newer Omnimax features take advantage of the visual possibilities and tread very lightly on the hows and whys behind canyon formations and jet propulsion.
The current feature does touch on birds, pointing out that birds have understood the magic of flight for 100 million years as opposed to man approaching that magic only a century ago.
This will be as close as most ever come to flying with a crack flight team of Blue Angels and, after watching some of the maneuvers on the giant screen, many are bound to conclude that this is close enough.

The film Dolphins is a quintessential OmniMax movie, with all the inherent strengths and weaknesses of the giant screen format.
There’s no fault to be found in the larger-than-life images on the five-story tall OmniMax screen; Dolphins is produced and directed by Greg MacGillivray, of Everest fame, and one can argue that it is, actually, better than the real thing.
If one is to judge OmniMax movies on their own specialized merits, Dolphins is very good; but if one is to apply more stringent criteria and think of them as movies in general, it is merely good.
