Why USCF should enact OMOV, by Bill Goichberg
An OMOV election for the Executive Board would feature discussion of issues in election supplements to Chess Life and on the internet, as well as campaign appearances by candidates at clubs and tournaments, further increasing the number of voters.
They appear to begin their analysis of OMOV with the conclusion that it should be defeated, and then seek reasons to justify such an evaluation.
Just as the fact that OMOV works well for other organizations has been disregarded by the USCF Delegates, the majority of politicians in the U.S. long chose to ignore the lesson of Wyoming and subsequent female suffrage states and continue their traditional and undemocratic ways.

OMOV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OMOV, an acronym standing for "one man, one vote" or "one member, one vote", is a term used to support wider and more equal participation in political systems.
Where voting is restricted, it is the slogan of those looking to achieve universal suffrage, and with the broadening of the electoral base to include women is better described as "one person, one vote".
In U.S. politics and jurisprudence, it can be shorthand for various reapportionment cases decided by the Supreme Court, culminating up to the Wesberry v.

Leadership convention - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These ex officio delegates are automatically entitled to attend by virtue of being an elected member of parliament for that party, a member of an affiliated party in a provincial legislature, a member of the party's national or provinical executive, of the executive of an affiliated women's or youth organization.
Due to the implementation of "one member, one vote" (OMOV) systems and proportional delegate elections by most parties, conventions have declined in importance.
Until 2003, when it adopted an OMOV system, every biennial convention of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and its successor, the New Democratic Party, in the twentieth century was a leadership convention.

If OMOV is not adopted, the effect on the membership, and therefore the party, would be very negative.
· With reference to the idea of using OMOV as a measure to stop the loss of NDP members to activist groups: People leave the NDP for activist groups because they are active in their communities and, beyond having internal policy debates, the NDP isn't.
· OMOV could end up recreating barriers that exist in the larger society, whereby people with access to resources use them to sway the membership, while people on the margins have access to neither resources, nor adequate opportunities for dialogue and input with which to grow their political understanding and relevance.

One of the most important discussions at the federal NDP convention was on the question of ‘one member one vote’ (OMOV) for the selection of the party’s leader.
OMOV doesn’t change the situation at conventions one bit, doesn’t address some of the problems that exist with convention structure, and has strengthened the idea that "the unions are the problem" in the NDP.
The main backer of OMOV is NDProgress, a right-wing grouping opposed to the NDP having any link with unions and in favour of a more "mainstream" party.

Chartist - Whatever happened to One Member One Vote?
Indeed, a simple OMOV ballot could be used for members within a region or nation, with the candidate receiving the highest number of votes topping the list, the second highest going second and so on.
It emerged that while an OMOV ballot would be used for short listing candidates, the actual selection and ranking would be undertaken by a sub group of the NEC, behind closed doors, with a minority of regional representatives taking part in the process.
The NEC was, however, at pains to reaffirm its commitment to OMOV as a principle, and stressed that this was a one-off decision which did not set precedents.

As Andy Howell of Labour Reform points out "OMOV itself was hailed as the new foundation on which Labour was to become the 'most democratic party in Britain'".
Despite this, the principle of OMOV has already been breached in the selection process for MEPs, with Party members having no right to rank the candidates for the final list -- the crucial decision which will determine who ends up being elected to the European Parliament under the new closed list system.
We should demand an OMOV ballot to select the Labour candidate with a shortlist that includes all candidates who have been nominated by ten or more CLPs.

 Thesis: Chapter 3
A further aspect of the modernising changes made to the Labour Party since Kinnock became Leader of the PLP in 1983 is the change in voting structure for the election of the leader and for some policy changes.
Certainly, if members have OMOV together with the ability to put input into policy decisions, that is an increased voice option from the previous block vote situation.
This, however, is not the current situation, and arguably, OMOV in the current context is less valuable than the previous ability to discuss policy in Conference and via a freer NEC.
