ONGC , India's most valuable listed company, had won an auction for a stake in Nigeria's yet-to-be developed Akpo oil and gas field, offering between $1 billion and $2 billion, a source with knowledge of the situation told Reuters this month.
An oil ministry source said ONGC's proposal was deemed "very risky" and the cabinet rejected the proposal, although one television station reported that the proposal was only put on hold.
ONGC already has interests in Sudan, Libya, Myanmar, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Russia and Ivory Coast, yet analysts also voiced concern about its bid in Nigeria and said ONGC had not disclosed any facts about it to shareholders.

ONGC Videsh had bid for Block 2 in the Nigeria-Sao Tome joint development area as part of a consortium led by Devon/Pioneer/ERHC Energy.
The other partners in the block, besides ONGC Videsh with 15 percent stake, are Equator Exploration and A. & Harmattan with 10 percent stake each, and Foby Engineering and Momo Oil & Gas that hold the remaining stake equally.

ONGC said its deep-sea rig Sagar Vijay found the large gas-bearing structure in an area known as G4-AB, near a gas-bearing prospect operated by Reliance Industries.
ONGC said test results showed a flow rate of 14.42 million cubic feet a day from the well, the first it has drilled in the area.
Shares in ONGC, which is held 84 percent by the Indian government, are down 1.5 percent to 734 rupees in Monday trade.

India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) said yesterday it was not in talks with BG Group or any other firm to help it operate three oil and gas fields in which Enron is selling its 30 per cent stake.
ONGC has a 40 per cent stake in the fields while India's biggest petrochemicals group Reliance Industries Ltd holds the balance 30 per cent.
The fields were discovered by ONGC but the government invited foreign and local firms to invest and develop them in the early years of India's economic reforms which began a decade ago.
