Yoshimi, singer-guitarist for the Osaka, Japan based OOIOO, names a more surprising source of inspiration: "I was influenced by my dog's breathing," she says.
In 1997 Yoshimi, who has been the drummer for the Japanese rock group The Boredoms since 1988, hooked up with three friends for a magazine photo shoot in which they posed with guitars and pretended to be a band.
OOIOO is what happened when they learned to play and became the real thing.

Pronounced "oh-oh-eye-oh-oh", OOIOO expands on the tribal, repetitive areas sometimes explored by the Boredoms in a dynamic beat driven music that defies categorization, but contains elements of trance, new wave, and free-form jazz.
Starting out as a fictional band, cobbled together for a 1996 photo shoot for Switch magazine, OOIOO had the uncommon privilege of playing their first shows opening for Sonic Youth when they toured Japan.
Excluding Yoshimi, who handles guitar and vocals in the group, the members of OOIOO (Kyoko on guitar and vocals, Maki on bass, and Yoshiko on drums - they don't go in for family names) had limited musical experience when they released their first album in 1997.

OOIOO played their first shows opening for Sonic Youth in Japan around this time and have since released two records in the states- OOIOO (Kill Rock Stars, 1998) and Feather Float (Birdman, 2001).

Baltimore City Paper: MUSIC OOIOO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Yoshimi P-We's career as avant-collaborator has developed in some pretty heady company (Boredoms, Sonic Youth), so it comes as little surprise that a female group she assembled for a 1996 magazine article about a fake band would immediately go on to perform and record.
Thus the birth of OOIOO, and its fourth album, Kila Kila Kila, finds the band at its most seductive and sunny.
Colorfully felted in a multitude of textures, Kila Kila Kila could very well be the soundtrack to Fraggle Rock--hyperactive Muppets let loose in the underground, happily chewing on candy villages.

Ink 19 :: OOIOO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
During one of my previous attempts to review this album, I came up with the analogy that OOIOO is what Tortoise would sound like if John McEntire was an insane Japanese woman.
The spastic recess anthem "On Moni," the amorphous, expansively epic "Aster" (which plays out like a little sister to Tortoise's "Djed") and the chirping electronics, cascading piano and slipstream drums of "Anuenue Au" are all testaments to this, and affirm OOIOO as a vital post-rock presence.
These songs make for excellent background or foreground music while the rest of the album might be better enjoyed at a distance, like from somewhere slightly over the horizon.

It appears that OOIOO, Boredoms drummer Yoshimi P-We's side-project, had released Cococoooioo, a career-retrospective of their time on Yamantaka Eye's ShockCity imprint.
But as ridiculous as the principal is, the end result is a strong cross-section of the band's ever-changing sound.
Yoshimi manages to keep things concise and to the point here; thankfully, no song breaks the 8-minute mark, and the included tracks usually stay away from the repetitiveness that have occassionaly weighed down their output in the past.

Amazon.com: Feather Float: Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
It's not surprising that beneath this veneer of womblike ecstasy, Feather Float is disarmingly challenging, especially given that the driving member of OOIOO (pronounced "oh-oh-eye-oh-oh") is Yoshimi, hailing from Japanese noise merchants the Boredoms and Kim Gordon's (Sonic Youth) blistering Free Kitten.
But this, their second recording, is more Slits than Sex Pistols, more Ghost (meditative, psychedelic Japanese guitar wizards) than Boredoms.
Built on rhythmic and vocal layers, there is a tribal element to OOIOO, as modern looping techniques and ancient drum sounds collide in frenetic Dionysian revelry.

 The Other Music Update
For an OOIOO album, the third in this band's lifespan, "Kila Kila Kila" begins modestly.
Mostly though, strings lead this album down less psychedelic, more avant-garde tributaries thanks to guest players on the cello, violin and contrabass on "On Mani," and the almost all ambient "Aster" (well, at least the first seven minutes of this 15 minute ringer).
No matter what direction OOIOO takes within or into the next song, the playfulness of this group has always been a good guide.

This is all before a beat drops back in, thus guiding the track in and out of some heavily psyched-out noise territory and a final shot of sound towards the heavens.
The final track ties together the remaining threads of OOIOO's hour-long bliss-out, with cascading piano lines and familiar twinkling guitars running the gamut over some open-ended drum lines.
And while none of this could remotely be considered "pop music" (even in the most expanded sense of that term) one would be hard-pressed to find a listener who considers the cymbal crashes, guitar drones, and other random sounds to be noisy and not uplifting in the least.
