The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Cowes, town Councillors, relatives of Commodore Francki, and representatives of the IOW Polish Society and the ORP Blyskawica Society.
The Blyskawica, which had returned to Cowes for a refit, was anchored near the chain ferry, on the night of May 4, 1942, when 160 low flying German fighter-bombers attacked the town at about 11 pm.
The mainstay of the defence was the Blyskawica which used its heavy calibre guns to force the enemy aircraft to fly too high for their bombing accuracy to be guaranteed.

ORP Blyskawica was one of two British designed and built destroyer leaders delivered to Poland in the years immediately prior to the second world war.
In 1941 Blyskawica's original main armament and heavy mast were replaced, as the ship was apparently overloaded for open ocean service.
I bought and built the 43-44 version of Blyskawica, as I was keen to practice disruptive camouflage painting and weathering techniques, prior to completing my build of HMS Victorious (also shown in some of the images as a size comparison).

On the bridge of the Blyskawica with its captain Wlodzimierz Kodrebski was Petty Officer Stefan Wesolowski.
The ORP Blyskawica was damaged badly and among the many wounded in the battle for Narvik was Wesolowski who was ejected from his position at the antiaircraft gun turret by a bomb explosion.
After being escorted to the captain's cabin by a marine guard, the Polish sailors from the ORP Blyskawica were shocked to discover that their former petty officer was the captain of the Ganandoc.

 Ceremony to Mark the Twinning of the Historic Ships HMCS Haida and ORP Blyskawica in Poland
Due to a loss in strength after the sinking of the Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan in April 1944, the flotilla was reinforced with four additional ships in May 1944.
Of these four ships, two British destroyers and two Polish destroyers were added: ORP Blyskawica and ORP Piorun.
ORP Blyskawica is currently operated as an historic naval ship and is open to the public for self-guided tours from May to the end of November.

The Grom (means Thunder) was sunk on May 4 1940 by a single He-111, while the crew was pre-occupied with shelling of the German defense positions.
ORP Grom (H 71) (Cmdr Hulewicz) was sunk on May 4th 1940 around 8:0 am in the Rombaken Fjord near Narvik.
Here are some pictures of the destroyer itself, actually its twin brother, ORP Blyskawica which has survived the WWII.
