OZ_magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Oz was a satirical humour magazine first published between 1963–69 in Sydney, Australia and, in its second and more famous incarnation, from 1967 to 1973 in London, England.
The magazine regularly enraged the British Establishment with a range of left-field stories including heavy critical coverage of the Vietnam War and the anti-war movement, discussions of drugs, sex and alternative lifestyles, and contentious political stories, such as the magazine's revelations about the torture of citizens under the rule of the military junta in Greece.
Oz was one of several 'underground' publications targeted by the Obscene Publications Squad, and their offices had already been raided on several occasions, but the conjunction of schoolchildren and arguably obscene material set the scene for the infamous Oz obscenity trial of 1971.

 Salon | "Oz"
Then again, without the explicit sex, language and violence, "Oz" wouldn't be any fun at all -- what you'd be left with is an unrelentingly depressing premise and a bunch of miserable lifers to whom nothing good is ever going to happen.
In the debut episode of "Oz," a near-riot ensues when the warden announces that, by order of the state environmental protection agency, the prison is now a smoke-free zone.
The problem is, there are only so many prison plots and character types, and "Oz" has them all, from the "Dead Man Walking" nun (Rita Moreno as psychiatrist Sister Pete) to the Linda Blair innocent behind bars (Lee Tergeson as the aforementioned hapless family man who becomes the property of his sadistic cell mate).

Mal Burns Archives: Online Features Guide
This section starts with OZ magazine - the legendary and notorious publication that reflected the technicolour dream which shook the dust off the sixties greyscale establishment.
I first read OZ around issue 8 when I was still trapped in the English boarding school system and completely out-of-tune with any of the proscribed futures facing me. I was also rather innocent and took much of what I read in OZ, IT, Rolling Stone and others at face value.
OZ actually originated in Australia as a student magazine in the early 1960s where it caused the same kind of stir it did when arriving in Britain just in time for the pivotal "Summer Of Love".

MILESAGO - Media - Press - OZ magazine
Oz had two 'lives', one in Australia and one in Britian, and both versions were dogged by controversy, attacked by the Establishment and embroiled in famous legal battles, culminating in the infamous Oz obscenity trial of 1971.
Oz was a focal point for many confrontations between progressive and conservative groups over a range of issues including the Vietnam War, drugs, the generation gap, censorship, sexuality, gender politics and rock music, and it was instrumental in bringing many of these concerns to wider public attention.
At the time OZ was embroiled in a controversial legal case, which stemmed from a number of humorous articles published in OZ, and from the famous cover of OZ#6.

Oz Magazine, along with International Times was THE underground magazine during the late Sixties in England.
Oz ran for 48 issues and was printed in a variety of shapes and sizes during its time, this of course caused us hell while scanning these and if you look close enough you will see the 'joins' on some of the more awkward shaped issues....
Misinterpreted by many as a 'Psychedelic' magazine, Oz actually had more in common with Private Eye being VERY anti-establishment but with its target audience firmly focused on the emerging underground scene it scored a massive hit.
