The chairman of the House Conservation and Environment Committee, is calling for hearings in the next few weeks to grill officials from the state Health Department, the state Department of Environment and Conservation and Oak Ridge about a toxic waste incinerator there and the transport of mildly radioactive and hazardous waste into Tennessee.
But, the DOE says, it's really not up to Tennessee whether such wastes are sent to its Oak Ridge incinerator and the agency is going to send what it wants.
The people who operate the federal toxic waste incinerator in Oak Ridge don't know exactly what comes out of its stack or what effects those emissions might have on the health of its neighbors.
