The original Oakland Oaks basketball team played in the American Basketball League in 1962.
When the Philadelphia Warriors of the established National Basketball Association announced plans to relocate to San Francisco for the 1962-1963 season, the Saints moved across the San Francisco Bay to Oakland for the 1962-1963 season and were renamed the Oaks.
Several years later, another Oakland Oaks basketball team played in the American Basketball Association during the 1967-1968 and 1968-1969 seasons.

In the early years of the ABA, the Oaks were the only ABA franchise in "direct" geographic competition with an NBA team: the San Francisco Warriors.
The young Oaks dominated their competition, prompting some basketball writers to speculate that the Oaks were building an "ABA dynasty." During the first few months of the season, Barry was spectacular and averaged 35.1 points per game.
The Oaks logo is actually an adaptation of the acorn character logo that Susman originally designed for the old Pacific Coast League baseball Oakland Oaks, who left Oakland in 1955.

Oaks' owner Brick Laws was the father of one of Jackie's fraternity brothers at the Alpha Delta Phi house, and when he learned the offer he signed Jackie the following day to a contract of $75,000 divided equally over three years, with a bonus in excess of $5,000 and a Cadillac convertible.
He never technically played for the Oaks in the 1950s because two days before the 1950 draft, owner Brick Laws sold him, along with Billy Martin, left, to the Yankees for a reported $100,000 and players.
