OAMARU STONE is a natural material, not a manufactured article and its performance as a building material has been proven over the past 100 years.
When the stone is removed from the Quarry floor, it has a large moisture content, and when the milling of the stone is complete it will stay damp and soft for some time.
A general indication of stone requiring treatment is when mould, moss or lichen begins growing on the surface, causing green or greyish discolouration of the stone.

Situated adjacent to the slaughterhouse (now demolished) the carcass shed was constructed of Oamaru stone and native timbers, with one slatted wall and a slatted floor which were built to encouraged a free flow of air around the meat.
The shed has a hole in the north stone wall, to allow trimmings from the carcasses to be fed directly to the 200-odd pigs kept in the adjacent yards.
The granary is constructed in Oamaru stone, with an iron roof and concrete floor and a large attractive double door entry with a rounded arch.

Both population and crime continued to grow apace and by the late nineteenth-century Oamaru's crime rate was much higher than the national average, and the town was described by the Dunedin paper, the "Age", as being the ‘best crime-producing district in Otago’, and as that ‘drunken metropolis’.
The 1882-1883 courthouse for Oamaru was designed by the noted architectural partnership Forrester and Lemon, established in Oamaru in 1872.
One judge said of the courthouse at its centenary celebrations in 1983, that while he saw little ‘particular’ merit in the age of the building, the fact that the quality of justice handed out over that period of time had improved was extremely satisfying and a significant part of the building’s history.
