An oast house is an example of vernacular architecture in England, especially Kent and Sussex.
Early oast houses were simply adapted barns but, by the early 19th century, the distinctive circular buildings with conical roofs had been developed in response to the increased demand for beer.
One of the best preserved oast house complexes is at the Hop farm at Beltring which is now a museum.

Sections of the hop gardens were looked after by "bin-men", a kind of foreman, who would as a badge of his rank carry a long pole tipped with a sharp hook which he would use to cut the bines away from the hop-twine that supported them.

They had to be dried by heat, this was done in the round kiln (or roundel), wooden shutters built into the walls of the kiln provided the draught, the round outlet hole in the roof is partly covered by a white cowl to prevent the rain from entering.
Inside the oast house (upstairs) is where the green hops were laid on horse hair blankets to dry over the wooden slats.
