Oban is the principal settlement on Stewart Island, the southernmost inhabited island of New Zealand.
Oban is located on Half Moon Bay (sometimes used as an alternative name for the town), and has air communication with Invercargill and a ferry service to Bluff.
According to the March 2001 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings the island's permanent resident population was 387 at that time, a decrease of 30 since 1996.

New Zealand was one of the last places in the world to see the arrival of man. The Europeans didn't really start coming until the 1790's and the Maori, the Polynesian natives, only arrived on the island between 950 and 1100 AD just some 600 years before Cook.
New Zealand is a backpackers dream with an excellently maintained network of trails and back country huts running through fern forests, along beaches, and through glacial valleys of unparalleled splendor.

South Seas Pub, "the southernmost pub in New Zealand", is located inside the South Seas Hotel in the town of Oban, New Zealand
Oban is located along Half Moon Bay on Stewart Island, the smallest and southernmost of New Zealand's three main islands.
It is unknown if this is the southernmost Urinal in New Zealand- in my wanderings I was unable to locate one further south but it is possible that one is hidden in one of Oban's buildings or establishments south of the South Seas.

This trip was the third New Zealand birding excursion organized by Ross Silcock, a New Zealand native currently residing in Tabor, Iowa.
Birding New Zealand requires long treks between places, and often we would drive much of a day (through scenery that ranged from pleasant to downright spectacular) to a location that would add one or a few species to the trip list.
Oban, on Half Moon Bay, is the only settlement on the Island, and the only roads are in that general area.

This was my wife Diana's and my first visit to New Zealand, so the objective was not only to find birds but also to see something of the country and its culture.
Of the three identifiable mollymawks, one was a New Zealand White-capped, one a Northern Buller's and one a Shy of unidentified type.
After a brief detour to view the Franz Josef Glacier we visited the DOC centre in the village, and on leaving we were lucky to see two New Zealand Falcons flying through the trees behind the centre.
