 Obduction
Obduction is the overlapping of a continental crust by oceanic crust.
Obduction results in a continental plate being forced into the asthenosphere, where it will begin to liquefy.
The resulting pressure may be released through a volcanic eruption.

Obduction requires depression of the continental lithosphere due to the load of the oceanic lithosphere as it encroaches upon the continental margin.
Once the obduction ceased the subsided continent rebounded isostatically and the ophiolite slid westward due to gravity.

Abstract: The pre-collisional tectonic evolution of the north Indian continental margin is best recorded in the few ophiolite complexes preserved, the largest of which occurs in the Spontang area of the Himalayas.
The structural relations of the allochthonous thrust sheets with the sediments of the north Indian margin have been mapped in detail and show clear evidence that obduction occurred in the late Cretaceous.
Obduction of the Spontang ophiolite therefore records a separate tectonic episode in the Ladakh Himalaya.

This ophiolite complex is tectonically superposed over Paleozoic sequences of OMZ by obduction phenomena’s, along the southern boundary of the Iberian Autochthon, and is bounded towards the North, mainly by latter variscan intrusions of Beja Igneous Complex or Beja Massif (BIC/BM).
This deformation phase is related to the obduction and ophiolite emplacement upon the crystalline footwall of the OMZ (Fonseca, 1995; Fonseca et al., 1999).
The overall evidences (tectonic, metamorphic and geochemical) leads to the interpretation of MPC as an obduction related “mélange” (Araújo et al., 2005), induced by the first deformation phase, between the southern boundary of the OMZ and the ophiolitic nappes (Figure 13).

The Western Kunlun Range, located along the northern periphery of the Tibetan plateau, is a 1000 km long NW-SE mountain belt extending from the Pamir syntaxis in the west to the Altyn Tagh and the East Kunlun Range in the east (Fig.
Accordingly, we propose a scenario of Late Palaeozoic arc-ophiolite obduction, forming an Andean-type margin in the northern Western Kunlun Range in the Late Permian.

Continental Evolution Research Group | Geophysical Imaging of an Obduction Plate Margin, Oman
Understanding the mechanism of obduction (emplacement of oceanic crust onto continental margins) is fundamental to our knowledge of plate tectonic processes, earth evolution and dynamics.
The primary hypothesis tested in this project is whether obduction simply involves (a) continent-vergent, piggy-back style overthrusting of the margin by the ocean basinal facies and ophiolite nappe (Figure 1 A or B), or (b) underthrusting directed toward the Arabian continental shield (Figure 1 C).
The dashed line shows a low resistivity zone that extends under the Jabal Abyad mountains that may reflect conduction along the Hatat schist, which is highly deformed basement in the core region of the large-scale, NE-facing Saih Hatat fold-nappe.

The mechanism of folding is not known, but, as in the case of the passive margin sediments of Papua-New Guinea, it may have been induced by the obduction of oceanic crust following the establishment of a Huronian passive margin.
The structural architecture of the Huronian is similar to that of the rocks of the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley passive margin located on the southern margin of the Archean Pilbara craton of Western Australia.
In Canada an equivalent obduction event is represented by the ophiolites of the Ungava Peninsula.

Obduction occurs when the lithosphere is too buoyant to subduct, a situation usually only found when a back-arc basin is caught between two colliding continental masses.
The series of outward-dipping thrusts in SE Thetis Regio is characteristic of obduction and provides the first direct evidence of significant horizontal shortening by obduction on Venus.
Numerical modelling is used to constrain the thickness of the crust and lithosphere and to calculate the degree of shortening.

Melange obduction was coeval with the development of an angular unconformity within the Gangdese forearc basin to the north (between late Maastrichtian time and ∼62 Ma).
Alternatively, in concert with the conventional view of Eocene collision initiation, the obducted oceanic rocks may be of intraoceanic origin, while coeval changes in Gangdese forearc sedimentation may be a consequence of an increase in the rate of ocean-continent convergence following the demise of the intraoceanic subduction zone.

Their presence 1) indicates that for at least part of the history the platform to slope carbonates sequences were "thrust" to the northeast, and 2) requires non-passive margin behaviour for part of the ophiolite obduction.
This is an important part of the tectonic evolution (and ophiolite obduction) that has not been previously recognised.
Therefore, models involving craton-directed thrusting with domal culminations related to deep-seated, footwall and lateral ramps are too simplistic for the overall tectonic evolution of this part of the Arabian Peninsular.

Systematic sampling for paleomagnetic study was performed to understand the complex obduction processes of the ophiolite onto the forearc of the South American Plate.
The clockwise rotation, inferred from high coercivity remanent magnetization vectors, was attributed to a ridge collision event and the counterclockwise rotation, inferred from the low coercivity remanent magnetization vectors, was attributed to an accommodation phase into the South American forearc during obduction and final emplacement of the ophiolite.

SIU Geology - Eric C. Ferré - Alteration of peridotites
On Earth, large volumes of peridotites are brought to the surface as obduction ophiolites (Oman, Newfoundland, Papua, New Caledonia).
The obduction process generally leads to further alteration by continental aqueous fluids along structural discontinuities.
Finally, exposure to the surface results in supergene serpentinization, the formation of weathering rinds, and the development of soils on peridotites that, particularly under hot and humid climates, leads to the formation of peridotitic laterites.
