Obdurodon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Obdurodon is an extinct genus of platypus containing three species.
Obdurodon differed from modern platypi in that it still had teeth (except for juveniles, the modern platypus does not have teeth).
It seems, due to the shape of the beak, that Obdurodon dicksoni nourished itself digging in the sides of rivers whereas the platypus digs in the bottom of the river.

 Fossil Record of the Monotremata
Over several years, a jaw, a pelvis, and teeth of the Miocene platypus Obdurodon insignis were discovered.
Opinions differ on whether Obdurodon may have been aquatic, based on its association with numerous terrestrial marsupials.

 Platypus - Evolution and Conservation
Skull of Obdurodon (left) compared with modern Platypus (right) The holes in the upper jaw of Obdurodon are alveoli for true teeth - note the horny pads on the modern Platypus instead of teeth.
The fossil evidence suggests that monotremes originated and diversified in the Australian/Antarctic section of Gondwana, and that there was only a single dispersal to South America before the break up of Gondwana.
Although Platypus remains widespread and reasonably common, this trend towards increasing specialisation suggests that it may be moving out onto an evolutionary 'limb' and that its current status should not be taken for granted.

MESOZOIC MAMMALS?; Monotremata, an internet directory:
Obdurodon's molar is larger, has a higher and more complex crown (bearing in mind the comparison was with an upper rather than lower tooth), and the crown is proportionately shorter.
However, as the Obdurodon molars turned out to be lowers, the detailed comparisons lost some of their bite.
In Obdurodon dicksoni, it's particularly large, and this reflects the presence of a hypertrophied beak.

They are about 25 million years old, and have been named Obdurodon insignis.
The modern platypus has only vestigial teeth which are replaced by horny pads when it is still a juvenile.
Not true; there are other differences between the modern platypus and the skull of Obdurodon dicksoni than size.

Includes a number of Miocene (5-24 million years ago) Platypi.
May be part of Ornithorhynchidae; closely related to modern platypus.

Goohde saves the best for last, closing with the most enticing number on the album, the swinging, straightahead “Am I,” showing, if nothing else, that he can play in the pocket when he chooses to.
That’s one of four fairly respectable charts (among nine), the others being “Obdurodon,” “Hatam” and “Commercial.” The rest might be quite suitable for a warmup session in one’s basement, but as elements in a jazz album they are less than persuasive.
I presume that Goohde wrote everything, and there’s no way to know precisely how much was improvised, how much mapped out in advance, but as the rhythm section is invariably quick and responsive (and quite capable), the guess is that the program was well-rehearsed.

In 1991, a fossil tooth belonging to a different kind of ancient platypus (originally described as Monotrematum sudamericanum but now probably regarded as another Obdurodon species, see below) was discovered in the Patagonian desert of Argentina.
The tooth was found in sediments deposited over 60 million years ago, at the time when Australia and South America were still joined as part of the southern supercontinent Gondwana.
A) have been found in Australian sediments deposited between 25 and 15 million years ago, while a leg bone from the first close relative of the modern platypus (Ornithorhynchus sp.) has been dated to about 4.5 million years ago.

Digimorph - Ornithorhynchus anatinus (duckbill platypus)
The oldest known specimen is a jaw fragment with teeth from the Cretaceous (110 million years old) of Australia (Archer et al., 1985).
Other notable specimens include a 62 million year old tooth (Paleocene) from South America (Pascual et al., 1992), and a nearly complete skull of an extinct platypus (Obdurodon dicksoni) from the Miocene (15 million years old) of Australia (Archer et al., 1992; Musser and Archer, 1998).
There is some debate as to whether monotremes are more closely related to marsupials, or if marsupials and placentals are more closely related to each other.
