  Obdurodon Information
Obdurodon differed from modern platypuses in that it still had teeth (except for juveniles, the modern platypus does not have teeth).
The coronoid process and angulary process of Obdurodon dicksoni have quite disappeared in the platypus, leaving the platypus's skull flat on the sides.
It seems, due to the shape of the beak, that Obdurodon dicksoni nourished itself digging in the sides of rivers whereas the platypus digs in the bottom of the river.

Digimorph - Obdurodon dicksoni (fossil platypus)
We describe the Obdurodon endocast with reference to endocasts extracted from skulls of the three species of extant monotremes, particularly Ornithorhynchus anatinus, the duckbill platypus.
The trigeminal nuclei, ganglia, and nerves (i.e., trigeminal complex) are enlarged in Obdurodon as evidenced by their casts on the endocast; as is the case in the extant platypus.
The visibility of enlarged trigeminal nucleus casts on the endocasts of Obdurodon and Ornithorhynchus is a possible synapomorphy of Ornithorhynchidae.

Four species related to Platypus have been found in fossil deposits from Australia, including a complete skull of Obdurodon dicksoni and an opalised jaw fragment of Steropodon galmani.
Although Platypus remains widespread and reasonably common, this trend towards increasing specialisation suggests that it may be moving out onto an evolutionary 'limb' and that its current status should not be taken for granted.

This new species was named Obdurodon dicksoni and proves that in extinct forms of Platypus teeth were present, implying that their loss is a derived feature.
The snout of this species was similar to that of the extant form, however, questions remain over whether it was aquatic as a consequence of it's close association with a fossilised terrestrial fauna.
