  Oberheim Matrix12
The Matrix 12 was undoubtedly the zenith of Oberheim's history and when it was released, there could not have been a serious synth player in the world who didn't lust after this, possibly the ultimate analogue polysynth.
For Oberheim, it was a simple concept and a modern extension of their earlier SEM (Synthesiser Expansion Module) which established the company back in the early '70s.
To overcome this, Oberheim later released an optional upgrade that brought all twelve voices out on individual outputs (though this required you butchering the left hand wooden end cheek to accommodate it).

Oberheim polyphonic in TutorGig Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Tom Oberheim, the founder, knew that musicians needed a way to play chords on the synthesizers that were becoming popular in all styles of music in the 1970s.
Oberheim took the idea and electronics of a minimoog synthesizer and put them in a small box, making a few changes, and produced his SEM (synthesizer expanding module), the building block of his polyphonic synths.
The Oberheim polyphonic was later outdated by a new line of Oberheim synthesizers and Sequential Circuits synths that used integrated circuits; these were less heavy and much smaller than the Oberheim polyphonic.

Oberheim expanded on the SEM by using it as a basic building block for his later, less expensive analog synths such as the OB-X and OB-Xa.
Oberheim was acquired by Gibson, a larger musical instrument manufacturer.

 THE FULL STRETCH
Oberheim's design thoroughness means that hard-wired options are duplicated on the matrix, which is useful when further manipulation is needed.
Tom Oberheim has since said that he now prefers the sound of his earlier instruments over the OB8, Xpander and Matrix series, but didn't comment on whether this was what he thought at the time.
Oberheim continued, though it changed hands in later years, and even today, nearly 14 years on, you can buy a direct descendant of the Xpander in the shape of the Matrix 1000.

For whatever reason, Oberheim's Parallel Buss never took off (much like Roland's own DCB) and was to be superceded by the industry-standard MIDI but their drum machines were still popular at the time and remain popular today in certain circles.
Oberheim replaced the DMX with the DX which added new sounds and enhanced sequencing facilities.

Harmony Central®: Review: Oberheim OB·12 Analog Emulation Synth
Analog emulation is a tough sell for some vintage synth devotees, perhaps more so if the keyboard carries the name Oberheim, maker of some of the most ground-breaking synths of the '70s and '80s.
Because of the company's analog roots, the crossbar of expectation may be set unfairly high for Oberheim as it joins the march into the digital modeling arena.
The 12-voice, four-part multitimbral OB·12 uses Oberheim's "Z-Domain" modeling engine, which is based on subtractive synthesis and emulates the classic Oberheim analog filters.

The Oberheim Four- and Eight-Voice systems contained several seperate synthesizer modules w/ Moog-style front panels and innards made out of microchips tied together by a digital scanning keyboard.
Analog Solutions offers a module based on the Oberheim SEM (SEMblance) with a few added features the originals didn't have, and I inquired as to whether they had plans to combine four into a poly package and they don't seem inclined to do so.
