Oberlin is primarily an educational centre, the seat of Oberlin College, named in honor of Jean Frhdric Oberlin, and open to both sexes; it embraces a college of arts and sciences, an academy, a Theological Seminary (Congregational), which has a Slavic department for the training of clergy for Slavic immigrants, and a conservatory of music.
Oberlin was the first American college to adopt coeducation of sexes, and was a pioneer in America (1835) in the coeducation of the white and fl races.1 The village became a station on the Undergroui?d Railway, and an important centre of anti-slavery sentiment.
What is known as the Oberlin Theology (no longer identified with the college) cen~ed in the teaching of Charles Grandison Finney (1792-1875), who became professor of theology in 1835 and was Mahans successor in the presidency (1851186b).

Oberlin was the first college in the United States to accept African-American students regularly (1835), and is also the oldest continuously-operating coeducational institution.
Oberlin has long been associated with progressive causes; both students and faculty were involved in the controversial Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of a fugitive slave in 1858.
Oberlin attained prominence because of the influence of its second president, the evangelist Charles Finney, after whom one of the College's chapels, also a prominent performance space, is named.
