Oberon Correctional Centre is a minimum security institution for young male offenders situated 235km west of Sydney.
The centre is located in the Gurnang State Forest, on the Shooters Hill Road 40 kilometres from Oberon, approximately 255 kilometres south west of Sydney.
Oberon Correctional Centre has operated as an integral component of the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services’ strategy for managing young adults in New South Wales correctional centres since 1993.

There are Risk Intervention Teams in every correctional centre in NSW and two permanent teams, one at Mulawa, the major reception centre for female inmates, and one at the MRRC, the major reception centre for male inmates.
Approximately 30% of inmates in NSW correctional centres are under the age of 25 and are thus categorised as young adult offenders.

Due to the quick response of the centre's staff and inmate fire crew, there was no loss of life, no damage to the centre, and the damage sustained to the pine plantation was less than anticipated by State Forests.
During January 2003 inmates and staff at the Cooma correctional centre were requested by the local community to assist with clearing areas around a church.
At Mannus Correctional Centre inmates assist in hazard reduction programs, and consideration is being given to establishment of a unit to assist in mopping-up operations.

The association between State Forests of NSW and Corrective Services dates back to 1913 when the face of the state's prison system was changing from one of brutal punishment to one where the redeeming and rehabilitative features of work were recognised.
Working with the Forestry Commission (as State Forests was then known), Corrective Services made arrangements to site a number of prison afforestation camps in country areas where State Forests faced difficulty attracting local labour to establish its pine plantations.
The director of Corrective Services Industries, Wayne Ruckley, who has been involved in the development and management of inmate work programs for more than 20 years, is a keen advocate of plantation work for prisoners.
