Oberwart (Hungarian: Felsőőr, Croatian: Gornja Borta) is a town in Burgenland in Austria on the banks of the Pinka River, and the capital of the district denominated by the same name.
Oberwart is the cultural capital of the small ethnic Hungarian minority in Burgenland, living in the Upper Őrség or Wart microregion.
The new coat-of-arms of Oberwart was granted in 1972.

It is a Katastral (land office) Gemeinde (locality) in the Bezirk (district) of Oberwart, has 1551 inhabitants and 597 houses.
From pieces of metal, pottery and coins we may conclude that these graves were established in the period when present-day Burgenland was part of the Roman province of Pannonia, that is to say approximately in the first four centuries AD.
The large number of burial mounds from the Roman period leads one to the conclusion that a road passed through the district of present-day Riedlingsdorf.

I took some photos of the main street, the city hall, courthouse and the old catholic church where our 5th great-grandfather, Johan Griesbacher, son of Carl Griesbacher and Eva-Maria Panzenpeck, was baptized on December 26, 1750.
From Oberwart I drove to Veszprém City in Hungary arriving about 10:30 in the dark and had some trouble finding the Penzion Diana Fogado where I had reserved a room.

Before 1989, there were no legal provisions for the teaching of Croatian at a nursery school level and thus the use of the minority language depended entirely on the initiative of nursery school teachers.
In 1989, the amendment to the Kindergarten Law for Burgenland (the Burgenländisches Kindergartengesetz) introduced bilingual pre-school education in German and Croatian in 25 municipalities in 6 districts.
In all other municipalities of Burgenland education in Croatian has to be provided for six hours a week if 25 percent of the parents request it.

It needs to be noted that the term Romungri, which is frequently used by other groups for the Roma that have been living for a long period of time in the region of Hungarian influence, has pejorative connotations.

Unfortunately the records were devastated when the Turks went against Vienna (1683), and the whole district was burned down and lost.
There is a church in Oberwart which I believe to be the local church that my family attended since I have a wedding certificate for my grandparents from a church in Oberwart.
I have been to the cemetery in the town of Dreihutten and there are many Zumpfs but the family claims that they are not related to my grandfather which I find odd but "who knows".
