The ability to augment tempo so drastically became the band’s trademark along with Tardy’s unique vocal style, which distinguished them clearly from the rest of the emerging Florida Death Metal bands; nowhere is this more apparent than on the prophetic title track of their debut.
The paradox herein lies that Obituary was anything but a summation to and end, but more an exploratory journey into the infinite dehumanization of all that is known, as confronted brazenly by their best selling release yet, “The End Complete” and later followed by the cynical and dark expedition of “World Demise”.
Obituary has only aspired to live up to the standard they have set for themselves, one that numerous bands have strived to duplicate, but never attained, falling short both creatively and in lack of the unique talent that each member contributes to the near indescribable Obituary sound.

Obituary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An obituary is a notice of the death of a person, usually published in a newspaper, written or commissioned by the newspaper (rather than written by relatives), and usually including a short biography.
"Custom obituaries" frequently include fond memories of the deceased, expanded information about hobbies and other activities in his/her life, etc. Frequently, such notices use euphemisms for the term "died" (e.g., passed away, went to be with his/her Lord, etc.), often to soften the blow of one's passing.
Obituaries are a notable feature of The Economist, which publishes precisely one full-page obituary per week, reflecting on the subject's life and influence on world history.

 Obituary: Death Metal
Obituary emerges from Florida’s swamplands with a pestilent metal taking cues from the likes of Possessed, Slayer and early Celtic Frost in the development of what can be seen as the origin of pure death metal, in tone, imagery and theme.
The standard death metal intensity-enhancer of the blast-beat is an absent method in the band’s repertoire, choosing instead to pummel the listener with blunt force of expressions of sickness and horror.
As Obituary are a band who understand their limits and strengths within this style, this is a genuine work never succumbing to overburdening exercises or unnecessary meanderings.

Telegraph | News | Arthur 'Killer' Kane
Kane, the band's six-foot-plus bass guitarist, resembled a brickie in drag - a scowling cross between Rapunzel and Frankenstein with a shock of curly, badly-bleached hair, usually over a tutu or chemise.
In 1972, the band's original drummer, Billy Murcia, overdosed during a tour of the UK on a combination of Champagne and Mandrax.
Nevertheless the band was on surprisingly good form - musically at least - and seemed genuinely happy to be reunited at an occasion that was not a funeral.

 Obituary
Obituary was originally formed under the name Xecutioner in Florida, USA, in 1984.
Since there were already a band called Xecutioner in Boston they changed into Desecration and finally in 1988 to Obituary.
The band was one of the first groundbreaking bands in the new death metal genre and together with bands like Death, Morbid Angel and Deicide they started the American death metal tradition and in a way also the extremel metal scene in Norway since these bands were their main influence.

John B. Marshall Obituary, Topeka Newspapers
The band was organized for political purposes by the Flambeau Club in North Topeka in 1884, and it soon became the best known musical organization in the West.
The members later agreed, though, that a band would suit their purposes better, and John Marshall was called into service to lead the new organization.
As leader of the band he was the same unaffected, unassuming, kindly man. His marked success with that organization was, more than to any other one quality, due to his ability to get along with his men.

So as the Obituary bassist attempts to explain the appeal of a genre that his band helped popularize, he speaks with the calm, patient air of a kindergarten teacher, the kind with tattoos and a penchant for dropping f-bombs.
Whereas many of its peers are preoccupied with the need for speed, Obituary blends fleet riffing with a doomy crawl, abetted by one of death metal's most distinctive guitar tones -- a nasty, stoner-friendly grind that buzzes like a blown subwoofer.
Moreover, Obituary band members have never painted their faces in pig's blood or donned Flash Gordon-worthy stage gear as have many of their Florida scene mates.

Obituary last played together in 1997 and during that time, it seemed that the band had split for good as the members separated and parted ways taking up roles on other bands or even different careers all together.
Usually after years of inactivity, you would expect a band's style to stagnate and it may take many months for a band to get back into the swing of things but, for Obituary there was no such obstacle in their way.

Oddly, the band normally only worked in the morning and Baker, with a living-out pass, was free from midday on to return to his flat and to work in civilian bands in the evenings.
The band played a famous and long-running series of jazz concerts entitled Sunday Night at the London Palladium and it was for one of these that Baker wrote his composition and feature for his trumpet entitled "Bakerloo Non Stop".
The band's coach was involved in a serious crash on tour in 1951 and there were several injuries, with Baker suffering a fractured right-hand finger.

Obituary carved a name for themselves with this release and the other albums that followed - and have proven to the world that Death Metal, and other genres of metal, have no concept of rules and regulations.
Obituary have marked their territory with this release - alongside the other names of the Florida Death Metal scene like Morbid Angel, Nocturnus, Massacre, Malevolent Creation, Deicide, Atheist and Death; and have more than held their own against the names mentioned earlier.
Obituary’s version sounds rather dark and raw; but personally the cover version recorded by Swedish Progressive Metallers Opeth in their My Arms, Your Hearse album is undeniably better.

The last time I saw the musician Mary Hansen, who has been killed in a cycling accident aged 36, she was strapping her bicycle bag across her chest, fixing a light to her clothes and walking to her funny hi-tech bike, preparing to cycle off in the drizzle.
The band she joined in 1992 was always there, a second family for a girl far away from her native Australia and the close and numerous family she had left behind in the late 1980s.
The band's combination of French pop, Krautrock, and 1970s Brazilian music secured a following that has stayed with them from their unlikely chart hit, French Disko, in 1994 to the present day.

These bands took the breakneck abandon of Slayer's Reign in Blood one step further, to the point of sheer, sometimes even ridiculous musical abandon.
Obituary, on the other hand, varied their tempo considerably -- and did so at the absolute height of speed metal nonetheless.

A lthough Stephen Stills and Neil Young became the best-known artists to emerge from the California band Buffalo Springfield, the group's bass player Bruce Palmer was a focal point of the group in its 1960s heyday.
He started playing in local RandB and rock'n'roll bands as a teenager, including an outfit called Jack London and The Sparrows, designed to cash in on the success of the British groups who were storming America at the time.
Then Palmer spotted a certain Ricky James Matthews III, later to achieve fame as funk-specialist Rick James (obituary, August 4 2004), and was so impressed that he arranged to swap places with Ricky's bass player Nick St Nicholas, later of Steppenwolf.

A few songs here stand out, mainly the first few, the title track especially, yet Obituary never were a singles band and their albums were better experienced from beginning to end rather than in pieces.
Relative to what Obituary would accomplish in the years to come, Slowly We Rot is one of their best albums, certainly their most inspired, though the production values mar it a little.
This is partly where it all began -- here and across the Atlantic, where the grindcore bands of Earache were carving out their own niche, one that would soon overlap with that of Obituary and their Florida peers.
