Objectivist philosophy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Objectivist political theory therefore defends capitalism as the ideal form of human society.
The Objectivist theory of art flows fairly directly from its epistemology, by way of "psycho-epistemology" (Objectivism's term for the study of human cognition as it involves interactions between the conscious and the subconscious mind).
Objectivists often respond to this by saying either that a) the claims are exaggerated, b) the cult-like practices were (unfortunately) irrational but do not disprove the philosophy, or c) such statements are justified because one's confidence in Rand is (or should be) based on reason and one's own individual, reality-oriented values.

The key tenets of the Objectivist metaphysics (The philosophical study of being and knowing) are (1) the Primacy of Existence, (2) the Law of Identity (Aristotle (One of the greatest of the ancient Athenian philosophers; pupil of Plato; teacher of Alexander the Great (384-322 BC)) 's "A is A"), and (3) the Axiom of Consciousness.
The transition from the Objectivist ethics to the Objectivist theory of politics relies on the concept of rights (An abstract idea of that which is due to a person or governmental body by law or tradition or nature).
Indeed, on the Objectivist account, one of the corollaries of the right to life is the right to property, which is assumed to always represent the product of one's own effort; on this view, one person's right to life cannot entail the right to dispose of another's private property, under any circumstances.

Metaphysics (or ontology) is the most basic branch of philosophy, the branch which studies the fundamental nature of existence, in Aristotle's words, the nature of "being qua being".
This is the Objectivist principle of "The Primacy of Existence".
Since a metaphysics is a belief about reality, and since beliefs must have objects in reality, then the only two meaningful worldviews are ones about either of the two kinds of things there are.

Any system short of this is regarded by Objectivists as a "mixed economy" consisting of certain aspects of capitalism and its opposite (usually called socialism), with pure socialism at the opposite extreme.

I believe that Objectivist metaphysics and epistemology firmly establish the correctness of their ethics, politics, and aesthetics, and I believe go a LONG way to refute the philosphical errors of the past.
Objectivist Academic Center professor Onkar Ghate wanted to write his dissertation on the primacy of existence versus the primacy of consciousness as represented by certain people in the history of philosophy, but the people in charge weren't thrilled with the idea, and I think he had to switch topics.
While I agree that metaphysics is an important part of the philosophy, I have to disagree with the claim that it is the base (or at least the whole base) of the philosophy (although that is the generally accepted taxonomy of the branches of philosophy).

Metaphysics (or ontology) is the most basic branch of philosophy, the branch which studies the fundamental nature of the universe, the branch which answers the question, "What kinds of things are there?".
The next point of Objectivist metaphysics is to observe the importance of the relationship between the axioms: existence comes first.
Metaphysically, it is possible for there to be existence without any consciousness of it, which is to say that existence is independent of consciousness, which is to say that reality is objective.

 Metaphysics Introduction
That "metaphysics" consists of a reiteration of the axioms of existence, identity, and consciousness, a reemphasis of the primacy of existence, and the entity ontology (as opposed to a matter ontology) as the description of the Objectivist view of cause embodied in the nature of entities rather than events.
Metaphysics is the philosophical study of existence; it answers the questions, "what is there and what is its nature?" But metaphysics cannot be fully understood if we do not know what knowledge is or how we know the principles of metaphysics are true.
For the purposes of this metaphysics that assertion is assumed.

Objectivist metaphysics is often found in the company of another metaphysical assumption, essentialism.
This stunning conclusion, however, is made possible only by sliding from a fairly weak objectivist claim to a very strong one that is not entailed by the weaker one, and is held in the strong form by no important current school of thought.
If objectivism is not refuted by institutional facts, and objectivist classification schemes are not made false by the implications of natural kinds, by empirical facts, or by the existence of interesting conceptual structures, perhaps the admittedly important facts of embodied experience can show objectivism to be inadequate.

 Rebuttal of "An Inconsistent Triad"
Since in the Objectivist view the cause of an event is an entity, it is possible that there could be an end to the series causes, because an entity is not required to have any prior causal conditions.
To put it another way, an Objectivist would say that if Bass could trace a particular causal chain backwards, he might come to a first event that was caused simply by the nature of the universe, by the bare fact of the universe's existence, with no prior events to be counted.
As a criticism of Objectivists, it still fails, because the second leg of his triad (the belief that all events have prior events as part of their causal conditions) is not in fact the belief of many Objectivists.

Objectivism: The Core of Objectivist Logic
Thus the Objectivist Metaphysics is the result of a very high-level induction from the empirical foundation and the first-level concepts (e.g., "tree", "dog", "rock", "man", etc..) which immediately succeed the empirical foundation.
It is the metaphysics which makes the conceptual identification of the empirical foundation itself possible, even though chronologically, the conceptualization of elements of this foundation must long precede the formation of the metaphysics.
We arrive at metaphysical knowledge in accordance with, but not by reference to, the epistemic norms; in fact, it is our metaphysical knowledge which provides the fundamentals for the explanation of the epistemic norms, not the other way around.

Punk, your belief in the chance that there may exist a contradiction between the Objectivist metaphysics and physics as understood through experimental data reveals an incomplete understanding of the relationship between metaphysics and science.
Since the Objectivist metaphysics consists of the step-by-step unraveling of the corollaries of existence exists, which is the core of man's understanding of reality, nothing in the sciences can ever contradict the Objectivist metaphysics.
The Objectivist metaphysics is not, as you imply, derived via "rationalization;" rather, it is derived by using reason to systematically ascertain all the implications of existence exists.

All of Objectivist metaphysics, for example, consists of the axioms, the primacy of existence, and the entity verses event theory of cause; there is no Objectivist ontology at all.
The only metaphysics there, however, beyond a reiteration of the axiomatic concepts: existence, identity, and consciousness, are a re-emphasis of the primacy of existence, the suggested entity-ontology (as opposed to a matter-ontology), and the Objectivist view of cause embodied in the nature of entities or existents rather than events.

To the extent that the results of metaphysical inquiry rely on logic and experience for their validation, A = A is indispensable to metaphysics at the level of empirical test to which metaphysical insights are inevitably obliged to submit in order to have standing as bona fide human knowledge.
