Topic: The Oblivians

KtB - Who Do You Love? The Gospel of Punk
The Oblivians worshipped whole-heartedly the myths of the punk and the bluesman.
The Oblivians had a distinct melodic sensibility and strong blues roots that mashed together happily with their deliberately messy sound; they amped up and distorted their vocals and guitars so much that many songs are harrowing howls from one end to the other.
Eric Oblivian describes the first time he saw Quintron perform in Memphis: "[he was] playing a contraption that had drums, tuned water bottles, a homemade synthesizer, a guitar laid on its back that he played with a drumstick, a trumpet, and a distorted microphone, among other things.

Mixed among the photos are shots of the Oblivian boys -- Jack, Greg, and Eric (aka Jackie-O, Gregi, and Erica) -- in drag.
All said, the Oblivians' music is perhaps best described as being ing lo-fi 60s garage rock heavily influenced by years of listening to Ramones, Stooges, Lazy Cowgirls, Cramps, and Gibson Bros. records.
While the songs tend to sound rather similar from one album to the next, what makes the Oblivians worthwhile is the sense of urgency they pour into their music as they evangelically implore listeners to embrace the power of rock & roll.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of salvation the Oblivians -- a group from Memphis usually referred to as garage, trash rock, or blues, but whom I prefer to think of as the next rock-and-roll band, period -- had in mind on their latest disc,.
Listening to their version of the traditional "Live the Life," with reverential organ and blurry, lumbering distortion up against the soulful, invigorated (and quite possibly drunk) moan of Greg Oblivian, you'd be hard put to distinguish between the two affections.
The Oblivians' task, then, has been to unlock rock and roll's inherent crudity and translate it to now -- to make sure that in 1997 (or whatever year it happens to be), rock and roll remains true to its eternal promise of living down to the standards of community indecency, however deep they may plummet.

On Soul Food, Jack Oblivian, Eric Oblivian, and Greg Oblivian trade off on guitars and drums (no bass) in a 30-minute album of guitar chicken scratching with bent note solos, some church organ, spitting vocals, and thud-and-crash drumming.
The Oblivians honor the same canon of musicians, opening the record with a stomping cover of Lightnin' Hopkins' "Vietnam Blues." A legacy to the past is established but the party has just begun.
The Oblivians ignore the speed, grunge, and artsy angles bands pass off as the next stage of rock.

 Scenestars Interview - Jack Yarber
Known to his most dedicated fans as simply Jack O. (a moniker he held while serving tenure with local legends The Oblivians), Yarber still lives up to the theory that in Memphis you can hardly be taken seriously as a musician if you play in less than three bands.
Yarber has been or is a member of The Compulsive Gamblers, The Oblivians, Knaughty Knights, South Filthy, The Cool Jerks, The Limes, Loose Diamonds and the Natural Kicks.
The Oblivians, still Yarber's most well-known band, was formed in 1993 and included Yarber, Cartwright and Eric Friedl, with all three members performing on drums, guitar and vocals, switching during shows.

Unlike many bands of the nineties, the rockin' rattle of THE OBLIVIANS seems like it was conceived in the back of dad's 1955 Savoy while JERRY LEE LEWIS and LITTLE RICHARD singles vibrated the upholstery.
The thundering drums, elevator-shaft reverb, and ragged tube-driven overdrive in tracks like "I'm Not a Sicko" and "Jim Cole" are bold enough to wake anyone stuck in a radio-induced snooze.

 TrouserPress.com :: Oblivians
The Oblivians' music could have been recorded in a town water tank with one mic; there's a stripped-down boogie chillun vibe that becomes almost trance-like.
The Oblivians sweat more than most, tap into your heart's blood and perform with gallows humor all the time, so these blue collar restorations of foundation rock are frantic simulations of that which is most elusive in music today: foul-mouthed greasers howling simple songs about simple things.
With the Oblivians at their bluesiest, each of the songs (two originals and one each by Lowell Fulsom and Henry Glover) is an absolute knockout: dizzying, discordant, jousting and stuttering.

Goner is the brainchild of Eric Friedl, otherwise known as Eric Oblivian from his tenure with the Oblivians alongside bandmates Greg Cartwright and Jack Yarber.
For the next five years, the Oblivians were prolific, building up a considerable fan base nationally, in Europe, and especially in Japan.
Like many influential bands, the Oblivians were underappreciated in their own time but are exponentially more popular today, as evidenced by a sold-out Halloween 2003 reunion show at the Hi-Tone.

The Crutch Interview: Talking With Greg Cartwright of Reigning Sound
Some still call him Greg Oblivian, obviously from his part in one of the more influential rock and roll bands of the mid 90s, but out of respect for his talent, I feel I should call him by his given name, Greg Cartwright.
His abilities – his energy, drive, and stamina are quite impressive, and associating the man with merely The Oblivians would be ignoring the great contributions he’s given to the independent rock and roll scene in the past decade.
And that’s not mentioning what would be considered his own bands, such as the aforementioned Oblivians and 68 Comeback, as well as Greg Oblivian and the Tip Tops and The Compulsive Gamblers.

There was a limited retrieval of support for the Oblivians' last and slickest release Popular Favorites.
(A hard-ass act to follow.) And despite how hungry the Oblivians' rabid following was for any new materiel, Favorites came off as maybe a little too slick for the band whose distinct trademark and initial appeal was the fact they sounded like something from the gutters, sewers and dumpsters of rock'n'roll.
Definitely to avoid the repetitive nature of the style, the Oblivians needed to inject the band with somethin' new.

The Compulsive Gamblers - Biography - AOL Music
Hitting the Memphis club circuit, the band recorded a four-song EP, Joker, in someone's kitchen in late 1991; released a year later, the record helped to win them a local following, and two more discs, Church Goin' and Goodtime, followed in 1994.
Cartwright and Yarber almost immediately re-emerged with a new group, the Oblivians (in which they renamed themselves Greg Oblivian and Jack Oblivian), but after the Oblivians folded in 1997, Greg and Jack opted to give the Compulsive Gamblers another try, this time as a three-piece with Thomas back behind the drums.
The new Compulsive Gamblers trio released an album, Bluff City, in 1999, and added bassist Jeff Meier for a European tour later that year.
