 Malcolm Messiter - UK Oboist
Bewildering velocity of fingers and tongue, phenomenal breath control, harmonics and the upward extension of the oboe's range a fourth beyond its 'highest note', F in altissimo, are allied to rhythmic vivacity and exuberant showmanship.
This oboist gave the work a brightness of tone, an incisiveness of phrase, and a brilliance of articulation, which are not within the range of the flute.
The phenomenon can be explained by the fact that the oboist is a dexterous performer, who "sang" beautifully in the slow movement and displayed an astonishing agility in the final Presto, which he played at an impressive speed.

Gonzalo X Ruiz: baroque oboist extraordinaire
Because the history of music has largely become the history of composers, the impressive number of star oboists of that time has become all but a footnote, but it was the players who were at the center of musical culture then.
One can get an idea of how much musicians were valued by their remuneration, and in one great musical establishment after another we find that the first oboists, along with the first violin, keyboard, and cello, were paid what would seem now to be fabulous sums compared to the compensation received by their colleagues.

In fact, the oboist was John de Lancie, who had been oboe soloist for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra before serving in the Second World War.
Strauss instructed his publisher to give de Lancie the rights for the American premiere, but the honor was denied him when the Philadelphia's celebrated principal oboist, Marcel Tabuteau, threw a fit at the thought of being upstaged.
De Lancie eventually became principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, but he performed the Strauss with them only once in the late 1960s.

Oboe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1980s saw an increasing number of oboists try their hand at non-classical work, and many players of note have recorded and performed alternative music on oboe.
Such bands include Henry Cow, Roxy Music, and Sigur Rós (although the oboists in these bands generally used the oboe as a secondary instrument, not playing it on every song), and the work of the indie rock musician Sufjan Stevens is also notable.
The American rock band REM features the oboe in several tracks of their album Out of Time, most notably as the lead melodic instrument on the wordless song "Endgame." The oboe is also featured in the Stereophonics' 2001 cover of "Handbags and Gladrags" by Rod Stewart.

The lack of a permanent, full-time principal may not be readily obvious to the concertgoer, accustomed to hearing the orchestra tune to the oboist's pitch, a plaintive A. But the instrument has some of the most prominent solo material in symphonic music.
Associate oboists, substitutes and acting principals fill in, and they are generally superlative musicians.
The oboist is particularly important, and is often seen as the pre-eminent woodwind voice (though clarinetists and flutists may dispute that judgment).
