Obolus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The obolus (or obol) is a Greek silver coin worth a sixth of a drachma.
Those without enough wealth, or whose friends refused to follow proper burial rites, waited eternally on the shore, and were never able to cross into the underworld.
In popular culture, the obol was used in the cult indie film "The Boondock Saints." Two brothers, in their role as vigilantes, place obols over the eyes of a murdered Mob Boss.

Silver drachms and obols were issued according to this system; didrachms were also produced at twice the weight of a drachm (Gardner, 112-119).
When coinage began in Aegina, one silver obol was to be valued as one bronze obeli.
It was not until the fourth and third centuries BCE that Greeks adopted the practice of minting bronze begun by their colonies in Southern Italy (Williams, 34).

Origin of Money in Greece: Cast iron
Plutarch[59] states that the Spartan iron obol weighs a mina, which is in agreement with the weight of ca.
In my opinion, the fee was originally paid with an iron obol and, for reasons of a ritualistic conservatism, it continued to be so paid even after silver became the accepted currency in the region of the temples.
In classical times, the method of producing the Spartan iron obols was either kept as a secret — metallurgists have been inclined to be secretive in all times—or was badly understood.

This is from one of the notes: "The conventional view has been that these coins represent dichalkons, however, this may not be true for a number of reasons: from the sizes and weights in RPC1 and RPC2, it is apparent that the smallest denomination actually represents two denominations.
From Table 2, the ratio of the obol to this "dichalkon" (called a hemiobol in the table) suggests that 2.17 to 2.36 of the smaller coin equalled an obol; however if the smaller coin were a dichalkon, then one would expect a ratio for 4 to an obol.
This would result in coins of a half obol and a quarter obol, which would solve many of the questions raised regarding the bronze denominations cited in the papyri.
