In physics, particularly in quantum physics, a system observable is a property of the system state that can be determined by some sequence of physical operations.
In systems governed by classical mechanics, any experimentally observable value can be shown to be given by a real-valued function on the set of all possible system states.
In quantum physics, on the other hand, the relation between system state and the value of an observable is more subtle, requiring some basic linear algebra to explain.

Typically, the model is a subtype of Observable and the view is a subtype of observer.
Because class Observable already implements all of the methods necessary to provide the observer/observable behavior, the derived class need only provide some mechanism for adjusting and accessing the internal state of the observable object.
The observer should then interrogate the observable object to determine its new state, and, in the case of the Model/View/Controller architecture, adjust its view appropriately.

The experimenter may infer what it might be like by comparing the empirically observable events to what her own experience would be like when in an analogous neurophysiological state, but that knowledge in turn would not result from empirical observations of her own brain, but rather from subjective introspection.
E.g., a transverse wave takes physical particles and discrete movements of these particles as its substratum when the wave passes through that particular material medium (a sound wave through a wooden door, for example), but the wave is not identical with the door, nor is it caused by the door.
Sound waves are completely describable in terms of the observable movements of their substrata, whereas not everything about consciousness is. This feature of consciousness cannot be accounted for sheerly by its multiple realizability.

That's why, when registering an Observer with an Observable, the Observer tells the Observable the name of the Observer's function to call for the update notification.
But when I was talking out this design in my head, I kept using phrases like "The observer tells the observable that it is interested in it." This really seemed like an action performed by the Observer, so I wanted that behaviour in an Observer base class.
This means that the fact that there's a reference to the Observer in the Observable does not keep the Observable alive if it goes out of scope or is deleted.

I am pretty sure the classified piece is the existence of low observable (or “stealth”) satellites, which is secret only in the administrative sense of the term.
