Strasbourg is in the heart of Europe, at the core of its industrial, cultural, and institutional establishments.
Strasbourg, while a business center, is also home to numerous parks and gardens and enchanting old quarters like "La Petite France" and the area around the Cathedral.
It is with such a rich culture that Strasbourg is able to find a comfortable balance between the services expected of a city and the freedom of a community which remains a proud representative of its region." (Text taken from Strasbourg.Info 10/27/2002).

Observatory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ground-based observatories, located on the surface of Earth, are used to make observations in the radio and visible light portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Most modern ground-based observatories are located far from major centers of population in order to avoid the effects of light pollution.
Space-based observatories can be used to observe astronomical objects at wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that cannot penetrate the Earth's atmosphere and are thus impossible to observe using ground-based telescopes.

ASP: The Gravity of the Situation
Indeed, several changes of nationality since its founding in the late 19th century, high-profile scientists in residence, and big projects born (e.g., HIPPARCOS) or maintained (e.g., CDS) in the Observatory give it a unique place in the international astronomical community.
The French university had already been moved to Clermont-Ferrand in central France, and German staff ran the activities in Strasbourg during the conflict.
The area returned to France in 1945, but, still today, the region obeys rules different from the rest of France with a so-called Local Law, priests and other cult ministers are paid by the State, different payrolls for civil servants, trains running on the right like in Germany, etc.

Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory is quite an interesting place for historians: several changes of nationality between France and Germany, high-profile scientists having been based there, big projects born or installed within its walls, and so on.
Most of the documents circulating on the history of the Observatory and on related matters have however been so far poorly referenced, if at all.
Several appendices conclude the book: lists of council members and of Observatory scientific personnel, as well as a compendium of the institutional publications until the year 2000.

This is the surprising conclusion reached by an international team of astronomers led by GianLuca Israel of the Astronomical Observatory of Rome [1], and based on detailed observations of the faint light from these two stars with some of the world's most advanced telescopes.
It was due to this emission that it was first detected as a celestial X-ray source of unknown origin by the German ROSAT space observatory in 1994.
Follow-up observations were carried out with several world class telescopes, including the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, and also the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), the Italian 4-m class observatory at the Roche de Muchachos Observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands.

Spectrographic analysis shows that 3,000 stars, once believed to be separate from Andromeda, move in lockstep with the galaxy’s rotation, as part of its outer disk.
In a related finding, new images from the Gemini South telescope in Chile exposed another giant disk around NGC 300, a far less massive galaxy that resembles our own but is 6 million light-years away.
Using Gemini’s high-end optics, Joss Bland-Hawthorn of the Anglo-Australian Observatory and astronomer Ken Freeman of Australian National University counted the brightest stars on the galaxy’s fringes.
