In the News (Fri 4 Dec 09)

  Album
Some albums have compartments which the photos may be slipped in to; older style albums often were simply books of heavy paper which photos could be glued to or attached to with adhesive corners.
Later "album" came to refer to a single long playing 33 1/3 RPM 12" record of songs or music, as one disc contained as much music as an old-style album of records.
Now that albums are on CD and new media, the matter of how long an album should be is open to debate.

Ground and Sky review - Dashiell Hedayat - Obsolete
This was probably an album created by stoners and intended for stoners, but I think anyone with a taste for the creative end of the psychedelic spectrum can probably enjoy this disc.
Obsolete is one of the more outstanding relics from those lava lamp times.
The side-long piece representing the album's other half is "Cielo Drive/17," which pushes the psychedelic meter further past the red ander, back around into the indigo.

Obsolete (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Obsolete is the third full-length album released by Fear Factory on July 28, 1998.
The album is considered a sequel to Demanufacture, the band's second full-length release.
From the description given in the album's booklet, the Smasher/Devourer is a large robot with an "egg-like frame" and "its arms are actually weaponry for protection".

 AMZ -- September, 1998 -- Fear Factory
It is a testament to man's ultimate desire for freedom, and it's name alludes to those people in recent times whose desire to make a statement was so strong that they poured gasoline upon themselves and set themselves on fire to gain attention to their cause.
The last two songs on the album, "Resurrection" and "Timelessness," feature both a change in tone and a change in style from the rest of the album.
The album is worth a listen, however, to fans of the aggro-rock sound.

The album is a collection of representative lyric poems from major poets of the Tudor period (1485-1603).
Use this album as a source for the third poem required by the unit essay and for the "gloss" exercise described below.
The album is delivered as a WORD document (posted in a small, 9-point typeface) that you can manipulate to suit yourself before printing or using the file as a source.

Fear Factory - Satan Stole My Teddybear
On this album, the motif of the band was at its strongest, as well as the songwriting muscle.
The album closer is a bit more of an ambient number that almost, but not quite succeeds in their experiment to create a moodier track.
But now that their latest is under the belt, it appears now that Obsolete will not be seen as a bump in the road to glorious and splendid success, but as the herald of a dramatic failure in songwriting acumen, comparable only to perhaps Metallica's notorious fall.

 Fear Factory
The band released a new album composed of Demanufacture remixes called Remanufacture in May 1997, closely followed in July 1998 by their new album, Obsolete, cancelling an appearance at the Dynamo Open Air Festival to finish completion of the album sooner.
Proponents of the concept album, Fear Factory have explored the idea of "Man versus Machine" throughout their work.
Demanufacture told a story, Remanufacture was another chapter in the story and Obsolete is another part of the Fear Factory concept.

Unfortunatly, this album failed to live up to my expectations, because from all that I had heard from friends and the like, I was expecting something life changing.
Enter 1998, and a new album is causing a bit of a stir among metal fans.
The lyrics to the songs tell the story as it unfolds across the album, and this is accompamnied by notes in the cd booklet that describe what the songs are about and what is happening in the co-oresponding part of the story.

The new single from the album, “Cyberwaste”, ditches the downbeat nu-metal style that the band had been released for singles and instead puts you front and center on the warfront, brutally massacring you with death metal drumming and killer riffs.
Of course, in the vein of their classic album ‘Obsolete’, the band had to do a new remake with the album, and as a bonus like with the Digipak release of ‘Obsolete’ and their rendition of Gary Numan’s “Cars”, Fear Factory serves up a healthy dose of Nirvana, in the form of “School”.
The latter portion of the album is fantastic as well, but it loses the high energy steam that the beginning of the album carries along.

REVIEW   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Obsolete, the third full-length album from Fear Factory does that in a number of ways.
The album really does have a predominately mechanical sound to it, especially from the drums of Raymond Herrera, which at times resemble loops with their speed.
At a time when a lot of bands and artists either dabble in one genre or the other (I fully expect a techo Puff Daddy song by the end of the year), it's truly interesting to hear when a group nails it dead on and still manages to put their own distinctive stamp to it.

This album is another concept masterpiece from Fear Factory, as crushing and incredible as "Demanufacture" yet slightly different and evolved.
This album, (like "Demanufacture") tells a well plotted story of a need for change, a character fighting the system with all odds against him.
Obsolete is full of crushing guitar riffs and the insane drumming you were hoping for from Raymond.

The album's jacket includes a story-line, which fills in the missing details of the plot between the song lyrics.
This album is Fear Factory's greatest creation to date, and is a must-have for any collector of heavy metal or industrial.

album), and the cover of Nirvana’s “School”, which not only demonstrates how close Nirvana’s earliest work strays towards metal (the track sounds remarkably similar to the original despite being obviously thrashed out with thundering death metal intensity), but also that the roots of Fear Factory extend considerably beyond the Ministry-Slayer hybrid cliché.
The cover is played with genuine respect and ferocious intent, and somewhat unfortunately puts the quality of Cobain’s song writing in relief with their own, as it is probably the best song on the record.
For whilst artist and genre fans are going to love this album (and I do), the glaring critique is that little has been added to their existing musical legacy.

Obsolete tells the story of mans eventual damnation by machines over ten stunning tracks of straight forward hardcore metal mixed with sample, hip hop, rap and dance beats and show Fear Factory at their most creative.
Now one of the main debates in the metal world at the moment is whether bands should use elements of dance, etc in their music, some say, it's a sell out, others say that it allows the band in question to be more creative.
Their merging of man and machine began five albums ago and has continued to evolve, slowly unfolding, embedding itself with new technology while keeping the core principle-that often evasive human element, present in the

Do you think that online music sales will make the concept of an "album" obsolete?
Some commentators are predicting that this will mean that the whole concept of a band or artist releasing an album of tracks will become obsolete, with the future being individual songs released on an ongoing basis as and when they are ready.
"Album" is the correct term - it means a collection of tracks, irrespective of the medium on which it is presented.
This makes no sense because albums are already obsolete and have been for some time.

This is the setting for the latest FF release, which has taken the route of the theme album in the spirit of King Diamond or (gulp!) Queensryche (oh God, I must be coming down with something…what the hell’s wrong with me? It just popped out…a bona-fide Brain Burp).
So I was silently grateful (ok, ecstatic) to find that the FF boys have not forsaken their heaviness and have continued to create some rather innovative material.
Continuing in the spirit of their fascination of man-meets-machine terrorvisions, Obsolete is FF in top form, Terminator-esque plot and all (and really, we all should have seen this one coming…especially with titles like "Securitron (Police State 2000)" and "Smasher/Devourer").

In 1995 the band released what some consider is one of the best metal albums of the ’90s, “Demanufacture”; the band’s most commercially viable release, “Obsolete,” saw the light of day in ’98.
While not a bad album by any means, it seemed fans were used to holding the band up to a higher standard.

The 1998 concept album by industrial metal band Fear Factory represents the peak of their technical and artistic triumph with some of their finest and most varied songs, excellent vocals and flawless playing.

Concrete (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Concrete is a demo album of the early Fear Factory, recorded in 1991 as pre-Soul of a New Machine cuts and re-released on July 30, 2002 on CD.
It was intended to be their first release, but the band wasn't happy with the record deal they were in, so they ditched their producer, Ross Robinson.
Incidentally, Robinson ended up using this album to promote himself, which would eventually lead him to producing Korn, which would make him one of the most sought-out Nu metal producers of the 1990s.
