The ball is always under the ownership of the fielding side and the batsman only has a right to view the ball whilst the umpire is in control of the ball or if the fielder lets him see it on request.
Though a decision under HTBT or OTF or HTB is a rare one at all levels of the game these game-situations are grilled into budding umpires during the course of their training (or should be).
