Nagano was formerly known as the province of Shinano, and was divided among many local daimyo during the Sengoku period.
Nagano was host to the 1998 Winter Olympics, which gained the prefecture international recognition as well as gaining the prefecture a Shinkansen line to Tokyo.
Nagano is also the prefecture which is bordered by the highest number of other prefectures in Japan and it contains the location which is the furthest point from the ocean anywhere in Japan.

Cummings' main passion in Obuse is in the sake (rice wine) business, where she helped transform an old building into a sake factory - the only sake factory in the country that still practices the traditional brewing methods - and Japanese confectionary shop.
Perhaps the most astounding thing of all is that Cummings was doing all of this incredible volunteer work for a village of foreigners in a country that is not her home and surrounded by a culture she was not brought up in.

 Nagano - The James/ Carlson family round the world trip
It has a lot of culture for a small town - the Hokusai Museum houses some very famous wood block prints, and there is also a Bonsai museum with some trees that are apparently 1000 years old.
We had lunch and dinner at the same restaurant in Obuse - the "Mont Blanc Teahouse" where the English speaking proprietress and her dog Ricky kept us all entertained.
The second day in Nagano started with Sarah doing a marathon laundry, while the kids and I ate doughnuts in our room.

Obuse is a lovely little town about 30 minutes outside of Nagano.
First, you reach Obuse via a small private train from Nagano, allegedly the most expensive train per mile in Japan, since it's a monopoly.
Obuse has a famous Sake distillery, run partly by a blonde American woman who's quite famous.

Obuse is twenty minutes by train (¥650) from Nagano on the Nagano Dentetsu line.
Obuse is famous for its chestnut confectionery and one of the best places to sample these sweets and also eat lunch is Senseki-tei, which overlooks an exquisite ornamental garden - set menus here range from ¥500 to ¥2000.
Nearby is the Obuse Guide Centre (daily 9am-6pm), a smart modern café and Western-style guesthouse (tel 0262/47-5050, fax 47-5700; ¥10,000-15,000) in a traditional, mustard-coloured building.

Some 20km northeast of Nagano, the small town of OBUSE has several well-preserved Edo-era buildings, but its main attraction is the Hokusai-kan (daily: April-Oct 9am-5pm; Jan-March, Nov and Dec 9.30am-4.30pm; ¥500), a small museum displaying rare paintings and other works by the master of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Hokusai Katsushika.
In 1842, the 83-year-old Hokusai was invited to live and work in Obuse by Takai Kozan, the town's leading salt merchant and art lover.
A special studio was built for the artist, and it was here that he completed four paintings for the ceilings of two large festival floats and a phoenix mural for the Ganshoin.

So, although Nagano is a bustling city, my primary impressions still remain agricultural.
The area around Nagano has many hotspring hotels and resorts in various small towns, where visitors can take a dip in gorgeous, large pools (some indoors, some outdoors) filled with genuine hotspring water.
Each hotel usually lists the known chemical composition of the water (e.g., how much sulfur, etc.), as well as ailments their specific water may help (or hurt).
