Obverse and reverse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The terms obverse and reverse apply almost exclusively to currency, and most often specifically to coins; they are usually described with less precision as, respectively, the front and back sides, or with regard to a coin tossed to produce a random choice between two things, "heads" and "tails".
For this reason, the principal side of a piece of currency is the one that evokes that reaction by invoking the strength of the state, and that side almost always depicts the monarch, or any well-known representative of the state, or a symbol of the state.
In any case, this secondary side is usually less focused, and probably always less central, than the obverse, to the facilitation of the acceptance of the currency.

The obverse design for subsequent threepences was by Mary Gillick and depicted Elizabeth II facing to the right and continued in use until the cessation of minting in 1964.

The obverse legend is badly blundered and barely recognizable, but does clearly contain elements of Domitian's name.
It's been suggested though that the hopelessly garbled obverse legend more nearly resembles that of Augustus and that the resemblance of the portrait to Tiberius is fortuitous.

Since much more skill (and possibly effort) was required for the die engraver to tool the obverse portrait design than the reverse small graphic and legend, for the Indo Greeks the portrait was placed on the anvil die while the legend was placed on the upper die.
It is evident the modern Indian mints followed the earlier practice of placing the portrait side down in the minting machine and having the legend side uppermost on the moving die.
