Oc Eo culture artifacts were excavated in the fields of Oc Eo-Ba The, Nui Sam, Lo Mo and Dinh My in An Giang province; Nen Chua, Canh Den, and Mop Van in Kien Giang province; and Go Thap in Dong Thap province.

The capital was initially located at Vyadhapura, near modern Phnom Penh, though it may have been moved to Oc Eo at a later time.
According to reports by two Chinese envoys, K'ang T'ai and Chu Ying, the state was established by an Indian Brahimin named Kaundinya, who in the first century C.E. was given instruction in a dream to take a magic bow from a temple and defeat a Khmer queen, Soma.

According to historians, the “Oc Eo city” used to be located on 4,500 hectares of areas which are now the Mekong Delta provinces of An Giang, Kien Giang, Tien Giang and Dong Thap Muoi.
Before that in June 2004, artifacts of the Oc Eo ancient culture were on display at Vietnam’s historical museum in Ho Chi Minh City in order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of Oc Eo culture by French archaeologist Louis Malleret.

Oc Eo culture flourished in the southern region of present-day Viet Nam during the second and third centuries BCE.
Also on display is a collection of gold, silver and metal currency and jewellery - evidently very popular amongst the Oc Eo people - along with statues and reliefs of Buddha and Hindu gods such as Ganesh and Vishnu, which illustrate the ancient religious traditions of the southern region.

This project is the result of a collaboration between archaeologists of the Archaeology centre of the social sciences Institute of Hochiminh-Ville and the Ecole Française d'Extrême Orient (EFEO).
The program, which first stage will last 5 years, is composed of two main parts: campaigns of excavations organised jointly with vietnamese archaeologists, on sites selected for their high potentiel to contain remains of old housing and maritime trading.
Excavations should enable to draw out typologies which are missing to study this culture and stratigraphical sequences in order to relate the important amount of archaeological pieces to a precise chronology.

More than 300 artefacts from the Oc Eo civilisation will be on display at the Vietnam Museum of History from April 27.
Oc Eo cultural relics were discovered in Vong The commune in the southern province of An Giang in 1944 by a French archaeologist named L. Malleret.
The objects were not studied until after 1975 when Vietnamese archaeologists continued to conduct large excavations and evaluate the systematic development of Oc Eo culture from Dong Nai to Kien Giang provinces.

Can somebody tell me more about OC EO, I read it was part of Funan located in the Mekong valley of Vietnam.
During excavation, they found Roman coins and Indian artifacts signifying trading amongst the differents races which all dates back to 250 AD.

A critical element of the environmental research concerns identifying and dating canals that may have linked Angkor Borei (in the northern Mekong delta) and Oc Eo (in the southern Mekong delta) ( ARTICLE1 ARTICLE2).
Pierre Paris, a French geographer and colonial civil servant in Indochina, first observed these possibly ancient canals using aerial photographs in the 1920s and 1930s; however, he did not have the resources to ground-truth his claims.

Thieves have also gone to archaeological sites to hunt for antiques in Oc Eo in southern An Giang province, Lang Vac in central Nghe An, Cat Tien in Highland's Lam Dong, Dong Thech in northern Hoa Binh and even in sinking old vessels near Cu Lao Cham islet, Ca Mau and Kien Giang southern provinces.
The Vietnamese customs office says that since the year 2000, it has uncovered 16 serious cases of stolen antiquities on their way to overseas markets.

 Chronology of Asian maritime history
A gold medallion of Marcus Aurelius' predecessor Antoninus Pius dated 152 CE has been unearthed at Oc Eo, the main port of Funan in southern Vietnam, which flourished between the 1st and 6th centuries - especially after strife disrupted caravans across central Asia in the C2nd-3rd.
Other C2nd-3rd finds at Oc Eo include Roman coins, Indian seals, and jewellery.
At around the same time, a commercial centre developed at Ko-ying in the Sunda Straits; Malay seamen brought spices and forest products to Funan.
